Leonardi breaks course record, Hathaway takes the boys--Scarborough Boys/Girls win SMAA Relay titles

SMAA Relays was a memorable one this afternoon run in 85+ degree temperatures, the times match the temps on the girls side. The boys started things off, with the first race of 7, each race being 1.6 miles and run at 5:30 intervals.

Boys race #1

Some of the top talent in the SMAA was on display in this race, headlined by Nate Hathaway (Jr. Scarborough) & Taylor Dundas (Jr. Cheverus), other notables included Tim Belanger (Jr. Bonny Eagle), & Jeremy Earl (So. Gorham). The race was taken out by Jonathan Clement (Jr South Portland), at around the 800m mark Hathaway moved to the front, and never relented the lead from there. Dundas followed closely in tow, as the duo pulled away from the others just before the backstop and really sretched their lead over the other on the downhill section before the mile mark. Hathaway passed through in 5:05 and held the pace to the line, he eeked out 4 seconds win (7:56), which happens to be the 13 fastest time in history over Dundas (8:00). Earl ran a strong race for 3rd (8:26) as he was 3 seconds in front of Massabesic's #1 Ben Morrison (8:29), Tim Belanger rounded out the first 5 with a 8:31 clocking.

Boys Race #2

This race was over early as Craig Robinson (Sr. Scarborough) went out to the lead and never looked back, with his long powerful strides Robinson cruised to a 8:07 (3rd fastest on the day), which was 29 seconds better than 2nd place. Peter LePage (Massabesic) ran a strong race 8:36 (11th fastest on the day) to nip Josh Reali (Sr. Cheverus) at the line 8:37. Reali is usually Cheverus's #4 guy but ran in the two hole today. Tom Letourneau (Sr. Thornton) was 4th in 8:48.

Boys Race #3

Race #3 was dominated by Cheverus's Tim Woods (Jr.), who is the #2 guy regularly. Woods slowly eased away from Sam Chick (Sr. Scarborough), and put the race away on the downhill section before the mile. Woods clocked the 4th fastest time of the day (8:10), while Chick came home in 8:29 tied for 6th fastest on the day. Alex Graves (Gorham) had a strong run finishing 3rd in 8:45, while 7 ticks back in 4th was Tom Quentin (Jr. Thornton).

Boys Race #4

Brad Nakanishi (Sr. Scarborough) led the race from the gun as he clocked a 8:45 for the win, he ended up 21 seconds ahead of runner-up Madison Moody (Massabesic) 9:06. Rounding out the top 3 in the #4 race was Brian McHugh (South Portland) 9:15.

Boys Race #5

Joe Prosack (Jr. Scarborough) & Andrew Synder (Jr. Cheverus) ran together until about 600 meters left and then Synder used his sub 2:00 800m track speed to pull away from win in 8:55. Synder who has been battling injury looked strong over the final 600 as he put 7 second between him and Prosack. 200/400m runner Cam Stevens (Jr. Gorham) running XC for the first time had an impressive 9:09 for 3rd in the heat, looks like someone may be thinking about a move up to the 800m this winter,

Boys Race #6

The #6 race was a battle between Duncan Scott (Sr. Scarborough) & Nate Cortright (Massabesic), Scott led early and until the mile marker, where Cortright made a move to put a coupld of seconds on Scott, who stayed within reach as they entered the track a few strides apart. Scott had a strong last 200 meters as he took the race with a 9:05 clocking with Cortright coming home in 9:09. Jon Foster (Gorham) was 3rd in 9:35.

Freshman Race

The freshman race had a lot of red at the front of the pack as there were 3 Scarborough runners as well as South Portland boy all running well. Thomas Salamone (SP) took the lead just before the backstop but didn't make the turn unfortunately and lost close to 15 seconds, which proved to be to much to overcome, Wout Moulin (Scarborough) cranked the pace home for a 9:21 victory over teammates Nick Morris (9:38) & Ethan Law (9:45)

Girls

Girls Race #1
The most anticipated race probably in the history of SMAA Relays, turned out to be a record breaking run as freshman phenom Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk), scorched the course, taking the race out in 30 for the first 200m and 67 at the 400m. With the race just about over at that point, the question was whether or not she would take down the course record. Her quick turnover never faulted as she passed the mile in 5:30 and crusied in with a 8:45 to take 2 seconds from the previous record held by Erica Jesseman (Scarborough) now a star runner at UNH. The fast pace set by Leonardi, dragged the rest of the field to some very impressive performances. Coming in 2nd, running 9:08 was Lauren Fecteau (Jr. McAuley), which tied for the 4th fastest in history. Fecteau who was injured most of last fall, looks healthy and ready to run fast this fall. Coming in 3rd was standout freshman Emily Durgin (Bonny Eagle) clocking a 9:20, which tied for the 10th fastest in meet history.  The fast times continued as Vickie Hewey (Sanford) came across in 9:24, another freshman Fiona Hendry (Cheverus)was next in 9:28. The times kept coming in Rachel Wilkinson (Jr. Gorham)9:31 &  Melissa Dellatore (Jr. Scarborough) 9:34. Hannah Pierce (Massabesic) 9:40 & Kim Downing (Noble) 9:41 rounded out the top 9 in race #1. The pace of race #1 produced 9 out of the top 10 times on the day. But the star of the day was Leonardi, who has a chance to be one of the greatest female runner the state of Maine has ever seen.

Girls Race #2

There was still plenty of top talent toeing the line in race #2, Olivia Mackenzie (Sr. McAuley) led from the gun as she looked relaxed and comfortable as she clocked a 9:22, the 4th fastest time of the day.  Lauren Dudley (Jr. Bonny Eagle) ran a strong race to capture 2nd in 9:49- 11th fastest of the day and the battle for 3rd was intense Amelia Lundkvist (Jr. Cheverus) & Hannah Wiley (Jr. Kennebunk) raced hard over the last 600 with Lundkvist pulling ahead with a 9:59, while Wiley came home in 10:03.

Girls Race #3

Race #3 saw Amber Dostie (So. Bonny Eagle) take the lead early, at the mile she was 11 seconds up on Abby Chick (So. Scarborough), who started off a bit conserative, but finished very strong. With about 400m to go the gap was down to 2-3 seconds, and as the hit the track, Chick used her 2:22 800m speed to her advantage as she took the race with a solid 9:51, Dostie was a few strides back in 10:00, still good for the 14th fastest time of the day.  Brenda McCarthy (Thornton) has a strong showing as she was 3rd running 10:26 with Abby Nobert (Cheverus) 3 seconds back in 10:29.

Girls Race #4

Sarah Dugas (So. Scarborough) ran a strong race from the front of the pack, she never relented, and won the race by 23 seconds (10:18) over Macauley Kenney (McAuley) 10:41, who battled  Laura Hackney (Marshwood) 10:43 to the line. Liana Rubinoff (Cheverus) was next in 11:03 with Alisha Keezer (Kennebunk) 11:06 rounding out teh top 5.

Girls Race #5

The team race was very close heading into this final race for the girls.  Scarborough held a narrow advantage over McAuley & Cheverus.  Erin McElwain (Sr. Scarborough) secured the win for the Red Storm with an impressive performance, running 10:29, her time was 36 second ahead of 2nd place finisher Jenny Thoutte (Gorham) 11:05. Ashley Crane (Biddeford) was next across in 11:07 with Maddie Woods (Fr. Cheverus) 11:08 a step back.
