Returning Champions: Tahlia Mullen Class B 400m

Returning Champions: Tahlia Mullen Class B 400m

What are your goals for the upcoming season?

I definitely hope to go sub 60 for the 400m pretty soon. I started breaking 60 about mid season of outdoor, so I hope to bring that same speed to the indoor track. In addition to defending my state title in the 400, I would really like to win states for the 200. I was double state champion outdoor, and I hope to keep that trend going.

What have you done to improve in the off-season?

I run cross-country, so I trained for long distance all summer and fall. Cross-country definitely provides a strong base for the indoor season. Having that endurance actually really comes in handy in the 400.

What does a typical week look like for you training wise?

Most days, I do some form of repeats. The number and distance really changes day to day. I usually work on starts at least a couple of times a week. I also try to lift at least twice a week during the season.

What competitions are you most looking forward to this season?

I'm definitely looking forward to states and New England's. It's nice being able to race against the competition I didn't get to see the rest of season.

What was one thing you learned last year that will help you the most this season?

I learned a lot from my past experience at New England's. I had not idea what I was getting into last year, so it's nice having some idea of what to expect.

Do you have any pre-race rituals or routines?

Mainly, I like warming up with my friends who are running the same event as me. It takes some of the nerves away.

Who is your favorite athlete?

My favorite current athlete is definitely Allyson Felix. She's the 400 queen, no question. I would also name Sanya Richard's-Ross if she hadn't just retired.

What is your favorite food to eat the night before a meet?

I usually use meets as an excuse to carb load. Pasta, macaroni and cheese, and bread are definitely some of my go-to's.

What is the best piece of advice anyone has given you?

"Run the first half of the race with your head, and the second half with your heart."
