Returning Champions: Tia Tardy Class B 800m, Mile & 2 Mile

What are your goals for the upcoming season?

My goals for this indoor season is to improve my 400m, 800m, mile and 2 mile times. I would like I would like to improve my place at New Balance Indoor Nationals from last year. I would like to see my times drop by a few seconds in each event; 400m: 56-57, 800m: 2:10(+), Mile: 4:50, and 2 mile: sub 11. I think each are very doable, but just figuring out what meets will be best for each.

What have you done to improve in the off-season?

Taking time off is really important. So I always rest and make sure that my body feels healthy enough to get back into the rigorous schedule. Then, just starting back with some miles and then getting back into the season with a regular training week.

What does a typical week look like for you training wise?

Typical week is practice right after school from 230-5. There are typically 2-3 speed workouts a week with some long runs in between. I also go to the weight room after and spend an hour or so in there.

What competitions are you most looking forward to this season?

I am really looking forward to some of the bigger meets. Hopefully I will be able to run the Dartmouth Relays, NBIN, and maybe some other out-of-state competitions. For in-state, I am definitely looking forward to the State meet.

What was one thing you learned last year that will help you the most this season?

One thing that I learned last year is that advocating for yourself is really important. Not having a shared strategy for training or racing, is usually unsuccessful for everyone. Communication between your coaches or other support systems, is in the best interest of everyone and almost guarantees success.

Do you have any pre-race rituals or routines?

I like to have fun on race day, whether it is with my hair or with my socks. I think I try to wear crazy socks at each meet. Sometimes my hair will be in a ponytail, a bun, braids, corn rows, etc. If you watch me right before I toe the line, I will usually be snapping my fingers. I am not sure how that started but it is rather calming for me. I also like to find some time and just say a little prayer.

Who is your favorite athlete?

I might have said this previously, but definitely Alexi Pappas. She is so quirky and fun, and if you have ever met her, she is just very genuine. She is smart, as well as talented on the track (obviously). I still haven't seen her movie yet, but I am hoping to soon! Filmmaking is something that has always interested me, so having a role model that does both film and track is pretty amazing.

What is your favorite food to eat the night before a meet?
Really, there is not a favorite food that I have pre meet. I just eat what I feel will replenish my body and give me the energy I need for the race the next day; what I feel my body is craving (as long as it isn't unhealthy).

What is the best piece of advice anyone has given you?
"Run with your heart, Tia. Now go give em' hell."
