Festival of Champions preview: Girls Individuals

Abbey Leonardi (Fr. Kennebunk) Leonardi has been dominating this fall, breaking course records, and running away from the competition. She opened her season with a course record at the SMAA Relays over the 2 mile distance. Leonardi has yet to run a 5k this fall but comes into the FOC with a 3 mile best of 18:19 on the tough Massabesic course. The meet record is 18:25, and Leonardi has a shot to add that to her course record collection. Weather may play a roll in how fast the course is running, but no doubt look for Leonardi to lead the way.

Lauren Fecteau (Jr. McAuley) Fecteau has returned to the trails this fall better than ever, last fall she had to deal with a knee injury. Fecteau has yet to run the 5k distance this season, but has recorded 18:46 for 3 miles on a notoriously tough Lake Region course early on. Last time out Fecteau scored her 2nd victory of the season running 17:40 over 2.9 miles, the time would have won the boys race as well. Fecteau is a sure bet to be near the front of the race.

Fiona Hendry (Fr. Cheverus) Coming into the season, Hendry had slide under the radar, with the talent in the freshman class; her name wasn’t the first one to come to mind. Fiona has quickly established her name and has been running some great times. She is coming off a course record run over 3 miles on her home course, with a time of 18:43. The course record she broke was another top freshman Emily Durgin’s from Bonny Eagle. Her top 5k time was a 19:12 clocking at TA.

Olivia MacKenzie (Sr. McAuley) Mackenzie comes into the FOC running very well; she clocked a 19:30 for 5k at the Manchester Invitational last weekend finishing 4th in the Small Schools race. MacKenzie has been right with her teammate Fecteau all season; more of the same is expected at FOC.

Abby Mace (Fr. Maranacook) Hopefully Mace will be healthy for the FOC meet; she had to miss last week’s run at Brunswick due to an ankle injury. If she is healthy, she’ll be right there. Mace has had a great start to her HS career this fall; she is undefeated so far in 4 races. Her top 5k time is a 19:33 clocking at Leavitt.

Melody Lam (Jr. Mt. Blue) Lam is coming off a fine performance at the Manchester Invitational where she ran 20:12 in the Elite race finishing 12th. Lam has finished 2nd to Abby Mace in two meets this season. Last year at FOC, Lam was 9th running 20:07.

Amelia Lundkvist (Jr. Cheverus) Lundkvist is having another fine season; finishing 2nd in the last two meets to teammate Fiona Hendry. Last time out she ran 19:26 over the 3 mile course at Cheverus. Her top 5k time on the year is a 20:22 clocking at TA.

Rachel Wilkinson (Jr. Gorham) Wilkinson has run very well this fall. Last time out she was 2nd behind Leonardi. Her top 5k time of the season was a 20:01 on her home course at Gorham, where she finished 2nd to Vickie Hewey of Sanford.

Kim Spencer (Jr. John Bapst) Spencer is rounding intoof weeks ago. She added a 3rd place earlier in the season at the MDI Relays. Spencer finished 5th a year ago, clocking form heading into the FOC. She ran the 2nd fastest time at the Caribou Invitational a couple  19:47.

Heather Spurling (Sr. MDI) Spurling has been excellent so far in 2008, winning 4 of the 5 races she’s been in. She’s won the MDI Relays, Caribou Invitational over Kim Spencer, and her latest win a regular season meet at Orono. On Tuesday, Spurling took a victory at the Sectional Invitational, running 20:29 for 5k. Spurling runs well on the Belfast course evidenced by her 4th place run a year ago.

Michaela Swiatek (So. York) Swiatek has had a solid 2008 fall campaign. She has won her last two races over the 2.9 mile distance, both times running 18:34. Swiatek has yet to run a 5k, but had a strong 19:22 clocking for 3 miles at Cape.
