Sam Rusak breaks pentathlon, teams with Red Storm teammates to break pole vault record. Westbrook girls triple jump relay breaks record while South Portland's Steven Smith shatters 1600m racewalk record


Scarborough's Sam Rusak broke the year old USM Relays pentathlon record with a new personal best 3540. Rusak's mark added 190 to old record held by Drew Nealey. Rusak opened his scoring with a 8.24 in the 55m hurdles which was good for 788 points. Next up was the high jump were the defending Class A champion cleared 6-2, which earned him 696 points. The third event was the long jump were Rusak got out to 19-6 earning him 574 more points. Onto the shot put, the senior who is headed to UCONN next fall earned 640 for his 41-4 effort. The final event was the 1000m where Rusak clocked a huge 14 second personal best to stop the clock at 2:42.84 worth 842 points. The mark is the current US #2.

Steven Smith of South Portland smashed the meet record with his 6:51.13 effort. The time took 15 seconds off Spencer Dunn's year old record. The mark is US#1.


The Scarborough vaulters smashed the meet record in the pole vault relay with a mark of 40ft, the old record was 35'0. Sam Rusak led the way with a 15'0 effort his mark also broke the individual vault record of 14'0. Alex Dionne cleared 13'0 while Drew Gardner cleared 12'0.


Lewiston senior Jennifer Martin won the girls 55m hurdles in 8.96, she ran a state leader of 8.90 in the trials.


Evan Porter of Traip Academy ran a new state leader in the 55m as he clocked 6.62. Porter also won the 55m hurdles earlier in the meet in 8.04. In the trials of the hurdles Porter a senior ran Class B #1 & state #2 7.86.

Freshman Emily Labbe of Scarborough edged out freshman Emma Gallant of Cheverus 7.59 to 7.60 in the girls 55m dash. The times are state #1 & #2 respectively.

Junior Luke Laverdiere of Yarmouth ran a state leading 4:24.27 to win the mile by over 10 seconds.

South Portland junior Juliana Selser ran the indoor mile for the first time since her freshman year, and she showed she's fit and ready to run fast this winter with her 5:13.53 winning effort. Her time is a new state leader. Also in the race Anneka Murrin of Yarmouth finished second in 5:14.84, her time is a new Class B leader.

Jason Montano a sophomore from Thornton Academy won the shot put with a heave of 49-2 1/2.

Scarborough Boys nabbed a new state leader in the 4x200m as they came from behind on the third leg of the relay, and went on to run 1:36.57. Lewiston clocked 1:36.99 for second.



Ellen Shaw of Scarborough won the girls pentathlon for the third year in a row. Shaw a senior scored 2535 to hold off Christie Woodside of Hampden Academy by 9 points
