Class A Girls: Heading into the state meet, Scarborough is the pre-meet favorite as they have cruised through all class A competition this season, including a 31 point win in the Wester Regional over Massabesic. Up East, it's been quite a season for the Brewer Witches, as they won the Eastern Regional over Mt Blue by 29 points. This sets up a showdown between the Red Storm & Witches, teams that are similar in makeup. Not a true front runner on either team but a lot of quality depth. Can the Red Storm stay perfect? Will the Witches keep the title in the East? Or will will another team surprise the field?

Scarborough Red Storm
Scarborough comes into the State meet on a roll, winning the Western Maine Regional by 31 points to staty undefeated in Class A competition this year. This record has them in the #2 ranking in the MTCCCA for the majority of the season. Scarborough was led by senior Whitney Chamberlain (10th) 20:13 at last week's regional meet but got plenty of help from Melissa Dellatorre (15th) 20:39, Abby Chick (16th) 20:44 & Sarah Dugas (17th) 20:46. The Red Storm looked primed to win their first XC state title in Class A.

Brewer is coming off its best meet of the season at the Eastern Maine Regional where they easily won the title over runner-up Mt. Blue by 29 points. The Witches were led by sophomore Michelle Haluska (4th) 20:28, with freshman Sara Chavarie (8th) 20:58 & senior Kaitlin Noyes (10th) 21:05 also running well. Brewer looks to be peaking at the right time as the team ran seasonal best across the board. The Witches also have a top 5 pack time of 1:03. Massabesic is coming off a surprise runner-up finish in the Western Regional, as they beat out Thornton by 2 points to capture some hardware. The Mustangs have been under the radar all year long but proved that they are one of the most improved teams from the start of the season to now. The were led by junior Hannah Pierce (6th) 19:34. The Mustangs 2-5 runners have a pack time of 52 seconds which will help in a championship meet.

Thornton Academy comes into the state meet on a high note, finishing 3rd in the Western Maine Regional just 2 points back of rnner-up Massabesic. Thornton is another team that has been under the radar this season, as they made their debut in the MTCCCA poll this week at the #8 spot. Mt. Blue was the runner-up in the Eastern Maine Regional to Brewer. The Cougars have a young squad but have developed into one of the top teams this season. They are led by individual champion Melody Lam (19:46), along with freshman standout Addie Cullenberg (6th) 20:38. The Cougars will need their supporting cast to have a strong day to be in the top 3 at the state meet.

Class B Girls: With 4 of the top 5 teams in the most recent MTCCCA poll, including #1 Cape Elizabeth. squaring off in Class B it is sure to be a great race. Cape Elizabeth is the heavy pre-meet favorite after a dominating performance at the Western Maine Regional where they scored just 26 points to win by 68 points over Greely. So the real battle with be for the runner-up trophy will be between Eastern Maine Champion MDI, who scored a 2 point victory over John Bapst & Western Maine runner-up Greely, with a strong challege from Freeport expected as well. How good is this Cape team, can they beat the rest of Class B on their own? What team is going to emerge t take home the runer-up trophy? Can this Class send 3 teams to New Englands?

Cape Elizabeth has been the #1 ranked team in Maine all year and deservedly so, as they have run away from the competition at all in-state meets. They scored a scant 26 points at the Western Maine Regional, where they had 4 of the first 6 finishers as well as all 7 in the top 18. This may be the best female team to run ever run in Maine, the are deep and talented. They averaged 20:10 for 5k at Twon Brook, so it seems entirely possible they will average under 20:00 this weekend at the faster Belfast course. Ellsworth: Ellsworth was just 6 points back of Caribou at the Eastern Regional, so it won't take much for them to move up a bit. They were led by individual champion, sophomore Brianne Dunn (19:32). Ellsworth will need #4-5 runners to close the gap.

Orono was the surprise winner of the Eastern Maine Regional, with Mattananawcook just 3 points behind in the runner-up spot, with George Steven Academy one point shy of the runner-up position. an anyone run with the Flyers or will they cruise to the title?
