State Champion spotlight: Ashley Anderson (Mt Desert Island HS)
What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?
Leading up to the state meet I stayed focused and tried to treat it like any other meet. My goal was to go out and have fun.
How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?
I was super excited to be there and compete with some fast girls. I knew I was seeded well in my events so I was really nervous about the expectations but I kept it together and reminded myself to breathe.
You came into the state meet the top seed in three events. You came up just short in the 55m & 400m, but came through in the 200m. How did stay focused for the 200m? What did it mean to win that race?
The 200m was my last race of the day and in the previous races I didn't accomplish my goals so I knew the 200 was my last chance to really step up. It meant a lot to win the the 200 because last year I was the runner up and so this year I felt like I had something to prove. It was an extremely great way to finish the season and I'm so grateful.
You helped your team to a runner-up team finish, talk about the success of the team, and being a big part of it.
We had a really successful season so topping it off as state runner-up was incredible. With just 7 girls on the team, pulling off a runner-up title showed how hard we've been working all season.
Coming into the season what were your goals and did you achieve them?
My goal was to get a state title and work on staying lower coming out of the blocks. Throughout the season I had to do a lot of block work and focus on getting a better drive.
