State Champion Spotlight: Jarett Flaker (Scarborough HS)

State Champion spotlight: Jarett Flaker (Scarborough HS)

What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

I worked hard at all the coaches practices.  I worked especially hard on my form which sometimes breaks down during my races.  Because of past injuries, I also made sure I stretched extra.

How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?

I have had some high pressure meets which have helped like the Dartmouth Relays, 4 regional Junior Olympic meets and one National Junior Olympic meet in 2015 where I competed in three events and made one final.

You won the 55m dash the final to become the first freshman boy to accomplish that feat. What were the keys to your race at the state meet?
My biggest keys were staying relaxed and concentrating hard on my form.  I usually have to come from behind so it is important not to lose my form and stay relaxed.

Where you surprised at the success you has during your freshman year?

I far exceeded my goals which were trying to qualify for States and score a few points for my team in order to help them win another State championship.  To win the 55 and place second in the 200 was amazing.  My teammates like our captain Ben Batoosingh and Ben Hatch really pushed me in practices and meets.  It was an honor running with them in the relay at states and later setting the all time state of Maine record with them.

How do you think winning an individual state title will effect you heading into outdoors?

Winning the 55 will give me a lot of confidence for the spring.  I now know I can run with and be competitive with the older kids.  I am also excited to run different out door distances like the 100 and 110H, and 300H.
