With four runners breaking 13 seconds this season the Class B 100 meter final was bound to be competitive. Leavitt's Nicole Daigle came to the KVAC meet with the fastest time and shaved it by another 0.12 to take the top spot with a time of 12.58. Daigle had finished fourth at last season's KVAC meet. Like Daigle, the rest of the Hornets moved up this season as Leavitt took the Women's Class B title, after finishing 8th last season.
Lawrence's Kiana Letourneau was runner-up to Daigle, finishing at 12.88. The 100 foreshadowed the day as Letourneau's Lawrence team finished second to Leavitt.
Leavitt ended the afternoon with 82.33 points while Lawrence claimed 72.5. Last year's winner, Belfast, was third with 67 followed by Camden Hills (65), Waterville (63), Maranacook (61), Lincoln Academy (48), Winslow 36.33, Morse (33), Erskine Academy (30.5), Spruce Mountain (30), MCI (27.33), Mount View (10), Nokomis (9), Medomak Valley (8), Gardiner (1), and Oceanside (1).
Daigle also took the 200 for Leavitt, putting up a season's best 26.78, topping defending champion of Tahlia Mullen of Lincoln Academy. Mullen defended her other 2016 title with a win in the 400 finishing in 1:00.08. But Daigle added points for the Hornets taking the 4th spot.
Pre-meet only seven hundredths of a second separated the top three times in the Class B 100 meter hurdles, led by Leavitt's Kristen Roux's 17.68. Roux topped her season best with a 17.43, but was runner-up to Maranacook's Laura Ireland, the winner in 17.21. Roux also took 3rd in the 300MH behind Belfast's Kelsey Mehuren (49.18) and Winslow's Meaghan Bernard (49.42)
Maranacook's Ashley Cray cleared 4'10" to win the women's high jump just edging Winslow's Bernard on jumps.
Belfast's Kylie Nelson was a triple winner defending her 2016 titles in both the long jump (16-01.25) and pole vault (8-06) and adding the title in the triple jump for 2017 with a new personal best 34-05.25. She eclipsed her previous best by more than two feet.
Camden Hills dominated the longer distances. Defending champion Augusta Stockman, who came into the 1600 with the season's best time of 5:34.14, claimed the top spot again this season with a new personal best at 5:25.92. The Windjammers Grace Iltis, a first year, projected to finish second, did just that clocking 5:27.16. Both Iltis and Stockman notched new personal bests and each took about ten seconds off their season best.
A third Windjammer, Emma Trapani, also clipped ten seconds from her season best 3200 time to claim first spot with a run of 11:45.65 besting runner-up, Cecilia Morin of Waterville (12:13.64).
Defending champion Kaylee Porter from Erskine Academy triumphed again in the 800 besting Lawrence's Jaden Gray by finishing 2:25.41 to Gray's 2:31. Porter also placed second on the 400M accounting for 18 of Erskine's 30.5 points.
Spruce Mountain owned the 1600 race-walk as Emily White (8:14.87) and Isabelle
Castonguay (8:49.55) claimed the top two spots. White, last season's state meet
runner-up, took the KVAC championship for the second consecutive year and
Castonguay put up a new personal best.
It was clear from the gasps in the gallery that Waterville's Sarah Cox had won
the discus championship while her second throw was still airborne. Last season's
runner-up with a throw of 95-10, Cox added nearly twenty feet with her hurl of
114-03. The throw also topped her previous personal best by almost four feet.
Cox also took home the shot put championship but the competition for the top spot on the podium was much tighter as her throw of 36-02 just bested MCI's Christa Carr's heave of 35-09.25.
In all the Waterville women collected 30 points, nearly half of their 63 total, in the shot and discus. Jennasca Hubbard took 5th in both events and first year Corrine Rogers was 4th in discus.
Pre-meet favorite Mili Zapata threw 114-07 (new PR) to win the javelin for Lincoln Academy while Kiana Letourneau of Lawrence took a break from the sprints to claim the runner-up spot with a throw of 104-01.
Leavitt added to its team margin at the javelin as Allie Belaire and Liz Goulette took 4th and 7th respectively.
The Belfast women opened the meet by taking the 4x800 and
closed it with a win in the 4x400 bookending Leavitt's win the 4x100 relay.
