Northern Maine Class B Regional XC Championship Preview

The Caribou Vikings come into the Northern Maine Class B Regional riding a high of a dominating performance to win the PVC team title. The Vikings tallied 25 points en route to a 50 points win over Ellsworth. They are the heavy favorites to claim the regional title on Saturday as they had four of the top five finishers last weekend.

Look for Ellsworth & Mt Desert Island to be the teams competing for the runner-up plaque. Ellsworth was the runner-up at PVCs as they were eight points better than the Trojans. Based on best 5k times on the season that margin is an even close 5 points.

Erskine Academy who was just 6th in the KVAC Class B championship last week, hope to return top runner Courtney Paine who was held out.

Host school Belfast has the home course advantage as they look to punch their ticket to Twin Brook next week, and they should be able to do that, they were 5th at KVACs but didn't run there top two harriers Zoe Deans & Emily Jolliffe.

Presque Isle, Waterville & Old Town are they teams that should compete for the final two state meet spots.

Individually Winslow freshman Olivia Tiner is the one to beat. Tiner is coming off perhaps her best effort of the season winning the KVAC Class B crown winning by 14 seconds. Her best 5k of the season came at FOC where she was 4th in the freshman race running 19:21.

Erskine's Courtney Paine who missed last week could challenge Tiner. Paine was just nine seconds back of Tiner at a KVAC regular season meet at MCI in September. Paine hasn't run at Belfast this season but still has run under 20 minutes.

PVC Champion Abigail Wimmer of Caribou figures to lead the next group. Wimmer clocked a 21:25 last weekend on the tough Orono course, her best time of the season is a 20:45 effort at FOC, she looks to improve on that effort.

Chasing her will be Trinity Montigny of Ellsworth, who was third in PVC championship last week, and ran a 20:36 at FOC earlier this year. Ashley Violette (Caribou) & Caitlin MacPherson of Ellsworth are the only other individuals in the field to run under 21 minutes so far this fall.
