The second annual Hoka Southern Maine XC Classic produced the fastest 5k's in the state to date on a course that was in perfect condition to run fast in early September.

In the boys' freshman/sophomore race it was Freeport's Martin Horne ran at the front of the pack with Scarborough freshman Zachary Barry as the duo came thorough the mile in 5:20. Horne would pull away during the second mile and win comfortably in a personal best 16:39.11. His time placed him 15th overall on the day.

Barry was the top freshman in the field and cracked the 17 minute barrier for the first time in his career with his 16:56.61 effort good for 21st overall.

Kennebunk's Garrett Erickson-Harris closed well over the last mile to secure his third place effort with a finishing time of 17:01.80.

In the girls' freshman/sophomore race the defending champion Sofia Matson got off to a quick start, and never looked back. The defending Class A state champion from a year ago went through the mile in around 5:30 en route to her winning effort of 18:15.52 which broke her own meet and course record from a year ago (18:20.70). Matson had to deal with some cramps during the race which she said post race slowed her down a bit.

Freshman Delaney Hesler of Bonny Eagle ran an excellent race to finish second behind Matson, and third fastest overall in the meet with her 18:39.51 clocking over the fast terrain at the Narragansett school in Gorham.

Defending Class C state champion Olivia Reynolds ran a strong race as she finished very strong to run a personal best 19:11, good for 8th fastest overall on the day.

The boy's junior/senior race was very deep as pack of 10 plus boys came through the mile in a quick 5:01. The race spread out during mile two and was down to three with 800m to go. Deering Alec Troxell assumed the leading duties with John Auer of Falmouth and Gabe Coffey of Bangor in tow. Troxell would prove the best on the day as the senior sped to a 15:45.87 clocking to smash his personal best by twenty seconds.

Auer held on for a Falmouth all-best 5k of 15:49.72 to secure the runner-up spot, he also was well under his previous personal best.

Coffey who bypassed a meet on the tough Quarry Road Trails in Waterville yesterday in favor of today's speedy race hung on for an excellent time of 15:53.01to finish third.

The girls' junior/senior race was a two girl battle up front for most of the race with Gorham junior Kate Tugman & Freeport senior Lily Horne. Tugman set the fast early pace as she came through the mile in 5:40 with Horne 3-4 second back. By two miles Horne had closed up the gap, and took a slight lead with 800m to go.

Tugman wouldn't give in though and really found another gear over the last 600m as she pulled away for the victory clocking the second fastest time on the day and in course history with her 18:17.99

"I heard my mom yell don't let the gap open up too much"  Tugman said once Horne passed her.

Horne would finish second in a strong 18:36.73 effort,  while Bonny Eagle's Ami Beuamier who ran the race practically alone close very well to clock 18:44.96, the 5th fastest time overall on the day.

The Bonny Eagle girls dominated the competition as they averaged 19:23.10 for their top five runners to score 50 points to outdistance runner-up Falmouth by 32 points. The Yachtsmen averaged 19:44.68. More impressively for the Scots they placed all seven scoring runners in the top 22 runners, all running faster than 20:15.74
