Horne & Gaudrault Best In WMC
Senior Lily Horne of Freeport set the fast early pace, the defending champion broke away with sophomore Lila Gaudrault as the duo opened up a huge gap on the rest of the field. Defending Class C champion Olivia Reynolds ran third at the mile with Yarmouth's Maddie Marston in tow.
By two miles the leader had changed as Gaudrault moved to the front, erasing a four second gap, and opening up a five second lead. Horne remained second, with Reynolds breaking away on her on in third.
Marston remained fourth with York's Mara Lamprey moving up well during the second mile into fifth.
The final mile wouldn't see much movement in the top group as Gaudrault lengthened her lead to 23 seconds crossing the finish line in 19:29. The time was the fourth best in WMC Championship history on the course at St Joe's.
Horne the defending conference champion still bested her winning effort from a year ago by seconds with her 19:52 effort.
Reynolds finished strong as she was the top D2 runner across the line in a time of 20:42. Lampey continued her strong second half as she moved into fourth in 21:27. Marston rounded out the top five with her 21:36.
Yarmouth behind Marston's 5th place finish, packed their next three runners between 9th and 13th place to score 59 points edging York by 6 points for the overall best team.
Yarmouth also claimed the D1 title with 41 points with York taking the runner-up spot with 47 points.
Wells was the top team in D2, the Warriors tallied 38 points to easily out distance runner Maine Coast Waldorf by 34 points. Wells was paced by the 6th place overall finish from Heidi Fortin who had a strong sprint finish.
