Barnes Tops PVC Small School Race

It was expected to be a close race for the individual title in the PVC Small School race on Saturday in Presque Isle. Coming into the meet Narraguagus junior Travis Hunt has the fastest 5k of anyone entered in the race with a 17:28 effort, he was followed closely by sophomore Luke Barnes of Sumner at 17:32.

The race for the title came down to Hunt & Barnes, and this time around Barnes scored a 2.6 second victory to capture the Small School title over Hunt. A year ago at the PVC Championship Hunt edged Barnes by 5 seconds as the finished 7th & 8th overall.

The duo has had some close races in the past including a 4 second victory by Hunt over Barnes at the DAC Championship two weeks prior.

George Stevens Academy junior Caden Mattson ran to a third place effort with his 18:19. He was followed by a swam of Red Riots as Orono took places 4-9. Orono was paced by junior Tucker Ellis who ran 18:32.10. 

With six on the top nine runners Orono easily repeated as champions as they tallied 20 points to double up runner-up George Stevens Academy. Orono averaged 18:52 with just a 37 second split time. Calais was third with 112 points.
