GNG Prevails In Husky Throwdown


Some of the top throwers around the state participated in the 5th annual Husky Throw down at Maine Central Institute on Saturday.

In the girls javelin a field of 42 competed with sophomore Gabrielle Green of Maranacook out throwing the competition with a heave of 98-1. Green's mark ranks her second in Class C and eighth overall in the state of Maine, she placed 5th in C state meet a year ago. It was just behind her personal best of 100-10 achieved last spring.

On the boys side Messalonskee junior Sean Rodrigue took top honors in a field of 55 with his 148-6 throw.  His winning mark was an improvement on his best of 146-6 from 2018, and ranks him third in Class A and fourth statewide in the event so far in 2019. In the competition Rodrigue defeated last year's Class A thord place finisher Max Spelke of Mt Ararat who has a best of 150-1 on the young season, and threw 160-3 a year ago.

The girls discus saw a strong competition won by defending Class B state champion Sarah Cox of Waterville who prevailed with a throw of 100-04. The mark ranks Cox sixth overall in the state and tops in Class B. Cox who a year ago threw 121-9 finishing 8th in the New England was just competing for the first time Saturday with conditions less than ideal. Behind her Zoe Barnes of Gray New Gloucester was the runner-up throwing 91-7, the second best mark in Class B this spring.

As he did in Javelin Sean Rodrigue topped a field of 48 with a 124-8 victorious effort. He was one of six in the field to throw over 100 feet. For Rodrigue the mark was a personal best improving on his 122-9 from 2018. Currently he ranks 10th statewide and 6th in Class A. Kaleb Frey of Gray New Gloucester was the runner-up with a throw of 118-7 which is good for the 5th best effort in Class B.

In the shot put Sarah Cox won her second event of the day as the defending Class B champion opened her season with a toss of 36-3 3/4 to hold off a strong challenge from Christa Carr of MCI (35-4 1/2). Cox who had a best of 41-5 3/4 a year ago currently sits second in the state & Class B, behind Carr's 36-8 effort from earlier this spring. Zoe Barnes of GNG threw 33-10 1/2 for a strong third place effort, her throw ranks 5th statewide.

The boys shot saw Maranacook senior Ryan Worster top the field with his throw 46-6 1/4. His winning mark improved his only his previous best of 40-8 1/2 by almost six feet, and currently ranks him second in Class C. Justin Browne of Erskine Academy was the runner-up with a 44-0 effort.

The overall top throwers for each gender were selected as the throwmeister of the meet. On the boys side senior Ryan Worster took top honors. Worster won the shot put, placed third in discus, and 12th in javelin. On the girls side senior Sarah Cox of Waterville stood above the rest winning the shot & discus and adding a 14th in the javelin.

In the combined team scores Gray New Gloucester took tops honors scoring 63 as they held off a strong challenge from the Panthers of Waterville who were four points back with 59. Host MCI was third with 46 while Maranacook 37 was fourth with Erskine Academy 31 rounding out the top 5.
