Salute to Seniors: Logan Hughes (Brewer HS)

Name: Logan Hughes

School: Brewer High School

What was your most memorable race/meet?

For me my most memorable meet was this years River City Rivals. I came into the meet having what I considered a bad senior season. I long jumped a new all time PR of 4 inches (20-7.5) hitting 20 for the first time since indoor and moving up first that meet ahead of  Crispin Kamandula at this time both me and my coach we're ecstatic believing he had no more jumps and that I had won we both began to celebrate until we saw him on the runway looking very upset. Crispin proceed to jump 21 feet moving me to second. Even though I didn't win that meet it was both a humbling experience and one of the most exciting experiences  of my track career.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

For me 3 people come to mind, Old Town Jumper Zachariah Fostun and my former teammates Gabe Carrigan and Josh Hart. With Zach he was someone I went against every year for four years and every time I took a step forward so did he. Gabe was always just my goal to bet and he was the reason that I jumped as well as I did over my career. As for Josh he motivated me to get better because he would make his way over from Pole Vault just to out triple jump me once and never do it again that year.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment was finally hitting 20 feet at the Class B Indoor State Championship. For me that felt like the culmination of 8 years of learning and practicing that event and to finally hit that point on my last ever jump in High School Indoor track meant a lot to me.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your xc/track&field career in high school?

I wouldn't change a thing I love how my high school career played out from jumping 13 feet my first me to 20-7 my senior year.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

My most difficult obstacle was myself . I always found a way to put myself down and convince myself I was no good at this. But the times I realized I wasn't was when I competed the best.

What will you miss the most?

I will miss the my team the most. To be a on the Brewer High Track team is an experience foreign to anything else. There's a feeling of ritual and family, to sum it up it feels like a cult (Like a good cult)

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

No matter where you start at keep working, their's not a single person that cannot become good track athlete, with enough work you can become great.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

My Coach Johnathan Karp is the reason I am the athlete I am now. He's been coaching me since he was a senior sidelined by injury he used his senior year to help me and many other athletes on my team he then returned to help us and is continuing to do so. John has helped me reach my goals in my Jumps, made me a state level competitor and showed me what a coach can really do for their athletes.

What are your college plans?

I will be jump at the University of Southern Maine next year Majoring in Media Studies with a minor in Video and Audio Production.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I want to thank my team as a whole for making me love track along with teammates Josh Hart and Andrew Gillette they were there for my from middle school to now to motivate me and to be great friends when I need them. I also want to thank Maddie for being there to tell me that I wasn't horrible to lift my spirits when I was down on myself, to tell me I was good and to tell me when to shut up about track.
