Big Rule Changes Coming To Track And Field & XC

At it's most recent June Meeting, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Track and Field and Cross Country Rules Committee voted in several new amendments to their rule book, that look to make a debut for the upcoming XC and Track Season.  Typically, Maine follows all guidelines set by NFHS.

We picked out the five most impactful rules you are most likely to see in the coming year, and they effect nearly every event discipline.  Check them out below.

  • Exchange Zones have now been extended to 30m, utilizing the Fly-Zones as eligible areas for passing of a baton. This is for any relay leg 200m in length and below.  This reflects a similar move at the NCAA and International Level.
  • During Official Warmups, athletes competing in the Long Jump, Triple Jump, Pole Vault and Javelin will no longer be allowed run-backs (away from the pit), only run-throughs (into the pit).
  • Athletes who aid an ill or injured runner across the finish line will no longer be disqualified, as long as neither athlete gained a competitive advantage.
  • Long Jump pits built after 2019 must be a mandatory minimum of 23 feet long.
  • There is now a recommended distance of 100m for every straightaway at the start of an XC course.

Feel free to discuss your feelings on these rules changes in the comments below.
