The 2019 cross-country season got underway at Bonny Eagle high school on Thursday with temperatures in the eighties with plenty of humidity in the air. The girls took to the course first with seven individual races, followed by a freshman and then jv race.
On the girls side two time defending Class A state champion Sofie Matson took off from the gun and never looked back. The 2018 Footlocker finalist covered the 1.77 mile layout in a speedy 9:55. Her winning effort was 39 seconds ahead of 2018 Class A runner-up Kate Tugman of Gorham, and Matson's teammate Karley Piers who matched the second fastest time of the day with her 10:34 effort in race two.
Delaney Hesler a sophomore from Bonny Eagle led the charge for the Scots in race one as she clocked 10:42, she was followed by Scarborough's Kayla Werner in fourth place in the first race.
Race two belonged to Karley Piers of Falmouth as she matched the second best time of the day with her winning effort of 10:34. Behind her Emmaline Pendleton of Bonny Eagle broke 11 minutes with her 10:53 she was followed across the line by Scarborough sophomore Megan Randall who clocked 11 minutes. Iris Kitchen a senior from Gorham ran 11:06 for fourth in race two.
Scarborough freshman Christine Werner held on to win race three in a close one over Hannah Stevens of Bonny Eagle. Werner clocked 11:15 winning by 1 second. Annabella Brooks of Portland was third in 11:32.
In race four in was another Scot of Bonny Eagle crossing the line first with Emma Abbott running 11:59. Abby Fox of Thornton Academy was the runner-up in 12:18 closely followed by Emily Paruk of Gorham in 12:19.
Race five saw Emma Noonan of Bonny Eagle take the victory in a close race. Noonan finished in 12:26 with Fernanda Martinez of Scarborough a stride back in the same time, while Rachel Cummings of Gorham was third just a second back in 12:27.
The JV race saw Marshwood sweep the top two spots with Addie Fuller 11:57 winning while Maggie Chamberland 11:58 was second. They were followed across the line by Megan Laverns of Noble in 12:28.
In the team scoring based of the five fastest finishers of the seven varsity individual races Bonny Eagle showed they are the favorite once again with a strong 56:54 winning effort. Falmouth with two of the fastest girls in the field were second best at 58:27 just in front of the 58:38 posted by the Red Storm of Scarborough
