The SMAA season got underway with the SMAA Relays at Bonny Eagle HS, the meet returned to its previous format with seven separate individual races, followed by a freshman and jv race.

The first race produced the fastest time of the days as expected as Falmouth senior Ben Potter used a fantastic last 400m to hold off a hard charging Ethan Eickmann of Kennebunk to break the tape first with a time of 8:56 over the 1.77 mile layout, Eickmann a stride back was credited with the same 8:56 effort. 

Behind them Bonny Eagle senior Aiden Willey crossed in 9:06 he was followed in 9:11 by senior Connor Coffin of Scarborough. Reed Henderson of Gorham put in a strong 9:15 to place fifth in the first race.


Race two was very competitive as Ben Greene a junior of Falmouth running in his very first xc race of his high school career showed he is ready for a strong debut season after switching over from the soccer field. Greene one of the best kickers in the state showed his wheels as he kicked home for a 9:04 victory. Right behind was Scarborough sophomore Zach Barry who was credited with a 9:04 effort as well. Calvin Cummings of Gorham was third in a time of 9:23, followed by a 9:26 from Justin Tomison of Bonny Eagle and 9:28 from Matt Pooler of Massabesic.


Junior Erik LoSacco showed great form as he eased away from the field in race three to stop the clock at 9:21. Faran Igani of Falmouth was next in 9:39, while Owen Pfaff of Deering was third in 9:47.


Race four saw Joey Lancia of Deering break the tape first with his 9:51 winning effort. Behind him came Andrew Keene of Kennebunk in 10:00 while Scarborough's Ben Casselius finished third in 10:06.


In the fifth race it was once again the Deering as Isaac Tabb had a strong 10:05 effort to hold off the runner-up finish of Will Brewster of Portland and Adam Bendetson of Scarborough both timed in 10:11.


Andrew Sirois of Bonny Eagle running on his home course showed the way in race six as he ran a strong 9:54 to turn back a solid effort from Deering's Alexey Seredin 9:58. Vance Boyd of Falmouth was third in 10:27.


Race seven saw Owen Richards give Deering its third individual win of the afternoon with his 10:19. Cam Ginter of Bonny Eagle was second in 10:30.


In the freshman race Petros Engelhardt of South Portland used a strong finish to post the winning time of 10:17. He was followed by Miles Woodbury of Falmouth who clocked 10:21. In third place was Nathan Driscoll of Scarborough in a time of 10:55.


Bryce Beeler of Scarborough took the JV race in a time of 10:17 holding off a strong 10:19 effort from Baxter Weyand of host Bonny Eagle. Nate Brewster of Portland  ran 10:27 for third place.

The team scores were based on the five fastest runners from the varsity seven races. The Red Storm of Scarborough despite not running with top runner Tristram Coffin who was sick took the victory with a total team time of 47:53. Falmouth was second with a total of 48:11 followed by a 48:49 from Kennebunk.
