Lisandro Berry-Gaviria of Mt Ararat competed in the NXN National XC Championship at the Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland, Oregon on Saturday. This was the second consecutive year the three time Class A state xc champion has qualified for the event that featured 73 state champion among the boys and girls field.

A year ago Berry-Gaviria was sick in the days leading up to the race, and as we have grew accustomed to her in Maine he gutted his was to a strong 46th in 15:42.70. On Saturday he was able to improve on his 2018 performance as the Notre Dame bound senior finished 34th overall in a time of 15:40.7.

The fast opening mile saw him open up in 4:52 putting him in 56th place, he was able to move up 19 places over the second mile which he covered in 5:08. He continued moving forward getting up to a best of 33rd at the 2.75 mile mark before dropping back one spot over the finishing stretch.

"I was really disappointed with my performance, not the way I wanted to go out" Berry-Gaviria told MaineTrackXC via social media.

Hard to be disappointed finishing 34th in one of the most competitive races in the country which was run in wet conditions which created plenty of mud on the course. Nico Young of Newbury Park, California took the title, his winning time was 14:52.

With the cross-country season over Lisandro told us he would plan to run a limited indoor season that would consist of one regular season meet, KVACs & then states.

"My focus is on outdoor, I would like to run sub 9." he said.
