Scarborough Storms To Fifth Straight Class A Title

The Scarborough boys made it five Class A state titles in a row on Monday at the University of Southern Maine as the Red Storm tallied 103 points to easily outdistance runner-up Brunswick by forty-seven points.

Senior Jacob Goff got Scarborough off to a big start as he took home the shot put title with a heave of 52-4.  The 4x800m relay moved from the fourth seed to second adding eight more points to the Red Storm's total.

Sophomore Jayden Flaker left no doubt on the 55m hurdles as he stormed down the track to a new personal best 7.65 winning by .4. The time was the sixth fastest in state history and eclipsed his own sophomore state best.

Sprint standout Jarett Flaker coming back from a hamstring injury did just enough to win the 400m (51.34) and the 200m (23.11) to score twenty points, his titles were his ninth and tenth of his indoor career. The 200m race saw him and his brother finish 1-2, impressive consider the 6-2 Jayden was in lane 2.

Jayden would return to the track to anchor the 4x200m to a state leading 1:33.77 victory to finish off the day for the champions.

The Red Storm scored 13 points in the pole vault with four athletes on the podium led by junior Carter Chen's 13-0 personal best vault good for second place.

Sophomore Zach Barry scored fourth in both the mile (4:31.68) and 800 (2:02.73), while senior Tristram Coffin added a third place effort in the mile (4:31.22).

Senior Mahamed Sharif of Westbrook came into the state meet with a plan, get out fast and continue to run fast. The University of Connecticut signee sprinted the first 200m coming through in 26.3, and 54.3 at the 400m mark. He continued on crossing the line first for his second straight title, and in the process broke his own state meet record with a 1:54.60.

Mt Ararat's Lisandro Berry-Gaviria dominated the distance races as he broke away after the 800m in the mile to clock a 4:22.20 effort, while he broke Harlow Ladd's eight year old Class A state meet record of 9:21.87 in the 2 mile with a personal best 9:20.99.

Biddeford's Ben Drummey had the crowd roaring as he cleared bar after bar in the pole vault winning with a 16-0 clearance.

The 55m dash was the race of the day as Noble senior Owen Podolec sped to the third fastest 55m in state history with his winning 6.50. Behind him Isaac Ofielu of Thornton Academy clocked 6.56 the sixth fastest in state history, while third place finisher Andrew Farr of Gorham ran 6.58. This was the fastest race in state history with three under 6.60

The jumps provided plenty of last jump drama. In the long Falmouth Adrian Friedman seized the lead of his final attempt setting a new personal best and state leading 21-9 1/2, his previous best was a 20-4 1/2 mark. In the triple jump Nigel Katende of Lewiston eeked out the win with a personal best 44-1 1/4 to hold off Frank Morang of Cheverus who leaped 44-1.
