Turn Back The Clock Tuesday: Leonardi Wins 3200m NE Title
We turn back the clock to the 2010 Outdoor New England Championship held at Veterans Stadium in New Britain Connecticut to the girls 3200m race where sophomore Abbey Leonardi of Kennebunk won the title in a time of 10:26.48.
Abbey ran a smart race settling in behind the leaders in the early stages as the pace was 2:38 through the 800m. Abbey took the lead for the first time on the fourth lap as she felt the pace was slowing down, she would come through the 1600m in 5:18. She continued to lead pushing the pace through laps five and six as she hit the 2400m mark in 7:56, clocking a 2:38 for the third 800m of the race. Leonardi continued to push on lap seven breaking away from second place as she hit the bell at 9:13. Abbey had plenty left as she hit the the top of the homestretch and she pushed her way to the finish covering the final lap in 73 seconds, and a last 800m of 2:30. How good was her last 1600m of the race, well it worked out to a 5:08.
Leonardi broke her own Maine all-time best in the event of 10:36.30 set earlier in the season, she would. go on to run 10:19.09 to win the 2011 New England Outdoor 3200m as well, that time now ranks as the second best time in state outdoor history.
Abbey is one of the state's all-time great distance runners, she went on to run for the University of Oregon, where she helped the Ducks to the NCAA team title in cross-country her freshman year.
