Turn Back The Clock Tuesday: Schmelzer Wins Class C 400m
Today we turn back the clock to the 2019 Class C state championship at Mt Blue High School and the girls 400m race. Winthrop junior Jillian Schmelzer matched up against Maranacook junior Molly McGrail in section four.
Schmelzer entered the race with the only seed time sub sixty seconds with her 59.03 effort and was the pre-meet favorite. She got out very well making up the stagger on lane four before the 100m meter mark, she continued to lead down the backstretch, but McGrail was making some progress. McGrail shifted gears with 200m to go pulling even with Schmelzer about halfway through the turn. Jillian didn't panic though and maintained her form as they hit the homestretch with McGrail holding a slight lead. About 70m to go Schmelzer went to her arms, passing McGrail at about the 50m to go mark and crossed the finish line first in a new personal best 58.47.
Jillian's time equalled the Class C state meet record time set back in 2004 by Orono's Olivia Alford. McGrail's time was also a personal best, she entered the meet with a seed time of 60.90.
Schmelzer won the 100m dash prior to 400m when she clocked a 12.50, she also returned later in the meet to finish second in the 200m with a 26.28 effort. On the day she tallied 28 individual points to help her team to a fourth-place finish.
