Salute to Seniors: Darcy Cochran

Name: Darcy Cochran

School: Cape Elizabeth

What was your most memorable race/meet?

New Englands. My sophomore year I qualified in New Englands in the 100h and 300h. I got there with a goal in mind. I  wanted to place in the top ten in both events. I remember it also being a very windy day so everyone was a little bit nervous. I got into my blocks for the hundred hurdles, an ended up winning my heat, therefore going to the finals. In the finals I crossed the finish line at 3rd. I was so proud of myself. Later that day I had the 300 hurdles, I ended up winning my heat which was the second to fastest one. My time ended up placing me at third again.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

My greatest competition in the state has been Emily Labbe. She's a great hurdler and it was always a great race against her.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment is finishing my high school track career with 8 state titles.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your xc/track & field career in high school? There's not a lot that I would change. I've made great friends and had some amazing meets. However, I do wish I started triple jump as an underclassman.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Mental blocks and weak ankles.

What will you miss the most?

I'm going to miss so much. I'm going to miss getting my hair braided on the bus, I'm going to miss the long hot meets. I'm going to miss the feeling of achievement and winning. I'm going to miss all my track friends and I'm going to miss my team so much.

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

Take track seriously, put in the extra work out because in the end it's all worth it.

How do you feel about missing your senior season due to the coronavirus?

Missing my senior year of track is horrible. I never knew my last high school meet would be in New Englands. There's so much I'm going to miss my friends, my coaches and the meets. I wish I could have one more run in the 100 hurdles.

What are your college plans?

I'm attending Southern New Hampshire University to further my track and academic career.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I'd like to say thank you to my parents and coach. Thank you to my coach Worthley for believing in me and teaching me how to become a better competitor and hurdler. Thank you to my dad for giving me the confidence to win. Thank you to my mom for being the best track mom ever for believing in my goals and for helping me achieve them.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Thank you Maine track, It's been a great four years. <3
