2020 Maine XC Watchlist: Grady Satterfield, Mt Ararat

Notable Finishes: 4th KVAC Championship 2019, 5th NM Class A Regional 2019, 8th Class A State Championship 2019

Comments: Satterfield played a key role in Mt Ararat winning the Class A team title in 2019. He showed great improvement last fall going from 26th as a freshman in the state meet to eighth last year. Grady returns this fall looking to contend for the individual title.

How has COVID-19 affected you?

Luckily, COVID-19 hasn't had a great deal of effect on training. I do miss hanging out with my teammates and friends as much as I would have throughout the spring and summer. Obviously, we didn't get to race as much with spring track canceled, but we found some creative ways for fitness checks.

What has your summer training consisted of? How much mileage are you putting in?

Summer training has focused on gaining more knowledge on some of the more technical aspects of higher performance. I've been able to coordinate with my coach, complying with MPA guidance, and that's been helpful.  My mileage has been what would be expected.

What are your goals for the upcoming season?

Improvement on all levels. I'd like to see performance improvements from my team as a whole and a consistent and healthy slope of improved performance for myself.

What is your favorite workout that makes you feel most prepared for success?

I don't think I have a single favorite workout. When I reflect over a week's or two weeks' worth of time, see the combination of many different things and tweaks we can make to a training plan, that's when I try to do my best with preparation.

What did you learn from the last xc season that will help you improve in 2020?

Working as a team helps push individual performances. And when everybody puts in the effort, good things can happen.

How is your team looking for the fall?

Better than expected.

How do you stay motivated when you don't want to run?

I watch reruns of Bob Ross.

What is the greatest piece of advice you've ever received in the sport?

Train smart and stay healthy.

What are the top three "little things" that you do to prevent injury?

Warm-up correctly. Cooldown correctly.  And I try to listen to my parents when they tell me to go to sleep.

What is the one thing you have done during COVID-19 that you have never had time for in the past?

I got to work on building a garage and learned a lot.

What's the farthest you've ever run at one time?

4.84 miles

If every day were a holiday, what would yours be?

Thanksgiving. I like to eat.

Favorite subject in school?

Lunch. But in a close second is math.

If you could go on a run with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? Why?

Roger Bannister. Why? Breakthrough.

If your teammates gave you a superlative, what would it be?

Most quiet. I just am not chatty at practice at all.
