The 19th Maine Festival of Champions girls race was missing three-time defending champion and course record holder Sofie Matson of Falmouth as COVID-19 limited the field to only the original ten teams. Without Matson, it opened up an opportunity for someone else to win the prestigious race.

A pack of four that included Erin McCarthy of Bangor, Thea Crowley of George Stevens Academy, Olivia Mosca of Brewer, and Julia White of Orono set the early pace.

McCarthy knew she would be near the front but told us, "I don't like leading races, I figured I run with the pack and try to pull ahead at the end."

Erin pulled away from the field at the halfway point and never looked back as she cruised to the victory stopping the clock at 19:21.55, good for a sixteen-second win over the sophomore Thea Crowley.

Mccarthy credited her commitment to training this summer for her fitness level. "I definitely put in a lot of miles over the summer, I'm really glad they paid off."

Senior Olivia Mosca finished third (19:49) while senior Julia White placed fourth breaking the twenty-minute barrier (19:59.30)

The Bangor Rams with four runners in the top nine tallied forty points to outdistance runner-up Mt Desert Island by twenty-nine points.
