Junior Alexa Allen of Monmouth continued her undefeated season crossing the finish line first at the State Qualifier and MVC Championship meet held at Maranacook on Wednesday. Allen covered the 5k layout in 20:40 to outdistance the runner-up Peyton Estes a sophomore from Madison by 18 seconds. The duo were the only two in the field of 43 to break the 21-minute barrier. Estes was the top individual finisher not on a qualifying team and will advance to the state meet.

Finishing third was Lily Cannell of Maranacook (21:47.3) placed third as she edged out Holly Hunt of Monmouth (21:47.6) by the thinnest of margins.

Sage Fortin of Winthrop rounded out the top five finishers with a time of 21:56 as she secured the second individual qualifying spot for the state meet.

Allen and her teammates from Monmouth claimed the top spot and punched their ticket to the Class C state meet as they turned back the competition with thirty points. Also securing a spot in next month's state meet were Maranacook (47 points) and Boothbay (79 points).

While the meet did serve as the Class C State qualifier it also served at the MVC Championship meet, the final results removed Maranacook who isn't a member of the league. Allen was the individual champion, and Monmouth Academy was the team champion.

The win for Monmouth avenged a two-point loss a season ago to Winthrop. Coach Tom Menendez wasn't surprised by his team's victory today.

"This has been a year-long goal since we lost by 2 points last year and the girls were laser-focused. I was totally surprised by the margin of victory with all 6 girls having course PR's from 45 seconds to 3.5 minutes." Menendez told Maine MileSplit.

The MVC team title was the 14th in the last 20 years for Monmouth.
