Maine Girls 2020 Cross-Country All-Freshman Team

The 2020 Maine cross-country was well beyond unique due to COVID-19, starting with a late start to the season, wave starts during meets, and of course, ending before the state meet. Despite all the changes the class of 2024 had plenty of success on the trails this fall. These five individuals below were the freshman that we thought stood out this fall among all their peers.

Hadley Mahoney (Cape Elizabeth)

Mahoney seemingly got better with every race this fall concluding with a win at the WMC Class B Championship meet where she dominated the second half of the race leading her team to victory. Hadley won five races this fall and recorded a 5k personal best of 19:33. Heading into the state meet Mahoney was the individual favorite in Class B and ranked #7 overall in the Maine MileSplit Watchlist, she'll return as the favorite in 2021.

Addy Thibodeau (Bonny Eagle)

Thibodeau had a strong freshman season that saw her finish in the top five in every race. Addy ran a 5k best of 19:34.50 on the season and ended the season ranked 9th in the Maine MileSplit Watchlist. Thibodeau finished fifth in a talented field at the SMAA Cumberland County state qualifier helping her team to the title. In three different races, this fall Thibodeau cracked the 20-minute barrier. She'll return next fall as one of the top runners in all of Class A.

Jenna VanRyn (Camden Hills)

VanRyn finished in the top four in all her races including a win in her debut race. On the season her best time for 5k was 20:10. At the KVAC Class A North race Jenna finished fourth and sixth overall in the conference. She helped the Windjammers qualify as a team for the state meet. Look for VanRyn to be one of the best in the KVAC and Class A next fall.

Rita Cummings (Gorham)

Cummings was a consistent performer this fall running between 21:05  and 21:14 four times. Rita's top 5k time was 21:05 and she was able to win one race this fall as well. Cummings finished 19th in the SMAA Cumberland County Championship helping her Rams' squad to a third-place finish and spot in the state meet. Watch for Cummings next fall to continue to improve, and run in the low 20-minute range for 5k.

Sarah McClellan (Marshwood)

McClellan had a short season that consisted of two races due to York County being in "yellow" for most of the cross-country season. At the SMAA Cumberland County Championship, she placed fifth in a personal best 20:39.50 helping her Hawks squad to a qualifying spot in the state meet. Look for much more next fall from McClellan once she gets a chance to race more.
