Abbott Valentine 14:55 at RunningLane XC Championship

Hampden Academy senior Abbott Valentine races against some of the top runners in the country at the Garmin RunningLane XC Championship in Alabama this weekend. Valentine running in the "Silver" race the second-fastest seeded race of the event moved up nine spots over the final mile to run the fastest known cross-country 5k time in state history with his 14:55.82 to grab runner-up honors. The Class A state champion Abbott showed good control during the first mile of the race running 4:45.30 which had him in twenty-eighth place. Valentine moved up to 10th just after the 2-mile mark, before gaining eight more spots in the final mile which he covered in 4:4129. On the day his time was the 63rd fastest in the combined results. Closing out his high school career with an All-New England performance, followed by a fourth-place finish in the NXR Regional a week, and now the fastest 5k ever by a Maine athlete should open up options in the recruiting process for the senior.

Also competing in the meet was Valentine's teammate Charlie Collins. Collins, a junior ran in the "Bronze" race where he clocked a personal best of 15:32.96 finishing in fifth place. He finished less than three seconds behind the race winner. Charlie who helped guide the Hampden Academy Broncos to the Class A team title this fall ran near the front of the race for the entire 5k. Collins was in seventh the mile which he covered in 4:51.65, moved up to third at the 2.1-mile mark, and closed out his final mile in 5:01.80
