2010 Class C Girls XC Preview
Class C Girls Western Maine
It will be tough to repeat the team finish from 2009 again this fall, but it would be exciting to see that's for sure. Last fall the top three teams Freeport, Waynflete & NYA where seperated by just 3 points, with Freeport & Waynflete tying, but the Falcons got the edge with a better 6th runner. Waynflete would get the last laugh though as they won the state championship the following week.
Last year's 3rd place finisher NYA enters 2010 as one of the favorites. The Panthers under the guidance of coach Chris Mazzurco had a tremendous post season run. NYA finished just 1 point away from Waynflete in the state meet, earning the runner-up trophy. The team returns several runners from that squad and will be hungry to capture the title this fall. Leading the way for NYA will be juniors Hillary Detert (7th in 2009) & Maggie Meixell (9th in 2009). Other runners back are juniors Sarah Jordan (20th in 2009) & Moragn Scully (33rd in 2009) with senior Becca Mckelvy also expected the contribute.
Coming into 2010, The Flyers of Waynflete are once again one of favorites as they look to win the regional title for the 3rd time in 4 years. Defending state champion sophomore Martha Veroneau (6th in 2009) will lead the way, as she looks to be the best in region in 2010. Junior Emily Trafton (14th in 2009) along with sophomores Phoebe Suva (30th in 2009) & Jean Chen, senior Mica Thompson (37th in 2009) will be the supporting cast for coach "Ziggy" Gilliespee.
The rest of Class C is hard to get a read on right now with so many teams without 5 returning runners. Newcomers and freshman should be able to have a strong impact on the region. Look for traditional powers Freeport to be strong once again. The Falcons (pictured above) won the regional crown a year ago. They have a strong 1-2 punch with junior Ellie Soule (4th in 2009) & senior Lauren Easler (17th in 2009). Another team with a shot in 2010 is the Greyhounds of Lisbon, who didn't have 5 girls finish in the regional meet a year ago. They will be led by junior Meagan Thomas (5th in 2009).
Other Teams
Madison: The Bulldogs didn't have 5 finishers last fall. Sophomore Jessica Thebarge (23rd in 2009) is the top returner.
St. Dom's: They finished 4th last fall and return 4 girls from that squad. They will be an experienced team led by Alyse Carney (23rd in 2009)
Teams without 5 returning runners: Merriconeag, Monmouth, Wiscasset, Hall-Dale, Winthrop, Carrabec, Traip Academy

Individuals
The individual race should be very good this fall with 7 of the top 10 individuals returning. Sophomore Laura McDonald (Hall-Dale) is the top returner from last years regional meet. Last Fall McDonald surprised the field by finishing 2nd. Laura had another strong run at the state meet where she placed 6th, running her personal best for 5k, 21:51. McDonald ran 3 events in the Class C state meet during the outdoor season, she clocked a personal best at 1600m 5:49.41, good for 13th place. With a year under her belt, she should be ready to challenge for the top spot again.
Defending Class C state champion sophomore Martha Veroneau (Waynflete pictured left) will try to add the regional title to her resume this fall. Veroneau finished 6th last fall running 22:27, one week later on the same course she blitzed the field to win in 21:04, what a difference a week makes. Veroneau plays basketball in the winter, and doesn't run spring track, so she's been off the radar since last fall. If the end of last season is any indication, we should expect big things once again in 2010.
Junior Meagan Thomas (Lisbon) is another athlete to keep an eye on this spring. Last fall Thomas was 5th in the regional; a week later at the state meet, she peaked perfectely, moving up to 3rd, her time was close to 50 seconds faster. Thomas had a strong spring season, finishing 14th in the 3200m at the Class C state meet. Her best time was 13:03.09.
Others to key an eye are junior Ellie Soule (Freeport) and Hillary Detert (NYA) both are in the top 5 returning runners in 2010.
