Last fall an unknown freshman from Washburn first took Eastern Maine by surprise and the following week the rest of state with her dominating wins. The freshman was Carsyn Koch, who ran few races during the season as she was also playing soccer. Not even a 5 OT soccer game the night before the state meet could tire out Koch as she went on to win the Class C title by 1:12 seconds, her time was the 11th fastest of all classes. Koch will look to make it two in a row.
Waynflete's Martha Veroneau who won the title as a freshman, was the runner-up last fall, will be trying to get back on top this fall. Veroneau has the talent to challenge Koch which should make for a great race this fall. Another freshman who burst onto the scene was Koch's teammate, Carmen Bragg who raced her way to a 3rd place finish last fall. Junior Zoe Chace (Merriconeag) ran to a 5th place finish last fall, she'll be back looking to move up in 2011. NYA's Hillary Detert finished 6th in 2010, she rounds out the top 5 returners. Detert had a strong spring track season highlighted by a 4th place 3200m finish in the Class C state meet.
2010 champion Merriconeag Waldorf captured the school's first state title in any sport last fall with a 6 point win over WMC rival Waynflete. Merriconeag returns all 7 runners from the championshio squad, and will be the favorite to repeat in 2011. Expect 2009 champion Waynflete, who was the runner-up last fall to have a strong team as well, they return 5 runners from last year. Fellow WMC rival NYA figures to be in the mix again too. NYA finished 3rd last fall but return 6 girls in 2011.
