WMC CHAMPIONSHIP

Course Map

Division 1 Boys

#1 ranked Falmouth is the heavy team favorite, they are coming off a convincing victory over #3 Greely & #11 Cape @ Twin Brook last Friday, They'll have the home course advantage as well which won't hurt there chances of claiming the top spot. The team battle for the runner-up position should be a good one with the afrorementioned #3 Rangers of Greely,  the #5 ranked York Wildcats, #11 ranked Cape Elizabeth & #12 Freeport . Greely has the best 1-2 duo in the field with Nate Maderia & Stefan Sandreuter which may give them an edge. York has Micthell Finitz & a very strong pack behind him which gives the Wildcats a very good shot, Cape will has a solid top 3, they'll need someone to emerge in the #4 & #5 spots to have a shot at the top 2. The Falcons of Freeport have had a a great fall they'll be looking to carry that over to the conference championships, they'll need a big day from their 1-2 runners Taylor Saucier & Nick Sweet.

Tim Follo was the top D1 runner last year, he'll be shooting for that honor again in 2011 (Photo by Beth Rand)

Individually Tim Follo (Falmouth) is the runner to beat in this talented field.  Greely's Duo of Sandreuter & Maderia should give him a good run. Look for York's Mitchell Finitz & GNG's Will Shafer to move up the list as well and challenge for the top spots.

Division 2 Boys

Silas Eastman the defending champion will be looking to make it two straight conference titles (Photo by Beth Rand)

Defending champion Silas Eastman is back to defend his conference title, last fall Eastman covered the tough 3 mile layout in 16:18.8, just 10 seconds off the course record, depending on the weather he'll have a shot at a course record.  Eastman is undefeated on the season. Jack Pierce (Merr) & Cam Regan (NYA) placed in the top 10 last year, both are back having strong years. Watch out for Abshir Horor (Wayn) he was the runner-up last year, and is coming on strong towards the end of the season.

Division 1 Girls

#6 Cape Elizabeth the defending champions will have their hands full to repeat in 2011. #8 Falmouth took down the Capers 47-53 at Twin Brook on Friday behind a great individual effort from Madeline Roberts.  The race went back and forth between Cape & Falmouth with Cape ahead at the mile, then Falmouth surging ahead at 2 miles, Cape made a run over the final mile but came up short. #7 York can't be overlooked, they haven't race dover 5k in a while so the virtual meet is a bit misleading. The Wildcats have beaten Cape by 1 point earlier this year, in the last meeting between the two teams, Cape emerged with a 1 point win. Don't count of the Rangers of Greely either they will present a formiable challenege. With 4 teams in the mix for the top spot it should make for a great race.

Heather Evans #910 is the defending champion, #698 Kirstin Sandreuter was the runner-up last year both are back and expected to battle for the top spot (Photo by moosechili)

The top 2 runners are back from last year, Heather Evans (York) is the defending champion while Kirstin Sandreuter (Greely) was the runner-up. Both athletes have been sharp in 2011 and come into the meet with a shot for the top spot. Just last week Madeline Roberts (Fal) showed she's a threat for the top spot as she defeated Sandreuter at Twin Brook last week. Freshman Kristina Smith (Pol) is another runner to watch out for. There is plenty fo talent in this field, and the top spot is wide open.

Division 2 Girls

Waynflete's Martha Veroneau is the defending D2 champion, she is coming off a strong race at Twinbrook, and the race course at Falmouth suits her running style. Sarah Becker (Yar) & Hillary Detert (NYA) figure to be in the mix for the individual title as well.

Team Scores

Yarmouth is the defending champion but look for a strong Merriconeag squad that didn't compete last year to be the favorite. Merriconeag has shown it can compete with the top Class B schools this fall. Yarmouth looks to be the next best team they defeated Waynflete last week @ Twin Brook
