PVC XC Look

A special to MainetrackXC by Ryan McLaughlin

When it comes to traveling, arguably no cross country team in the state logs more school bus mileage than the Caribou boys and girls.

But only mileage the Vikings will put in this weekend will be on their picturesque trails, as Caribou will host the Penobscot Valley Conference championship meets on Saturday.

Racing gets under way at 12 noon with the girls’ JV race, while the first varsity race will go off at 1:20 with the girls, followed by the boys at 2:00.

All runners from Classes B and C will compete in one race, but the meets will be scored separately according to class, thus resulting in four team champions and four runners-up as the postseason kicks off.

The Caribou boys, ranked No. 5 in the latest coaches’ poll, swept through the postseason last fall en route to their first state championship in more than a generation, as the Vikings had previously claimed gold in 1938.

Coach Roy Alden’s club will enjoy home-course advantage, and feature a lethal pack led by senior Caleb Chapman, sophomore Ryan Washington and junior Brendan Wood.

Lucas Kinney, Jesse Sandstrom, Ron Lund and Josh Kovach will be counted upon for contributions as well.

Ellsworth, led by top individual Dan Curts, will look to challenge Caribou.

Curts and Orono’s Alex Bulteel will duel for individual honors, while Bulteel’s Red Riots, along with Bangor Christian, are team favorites in the Class C division.

For the girls, this is shaping up to be a two-horse race between second-ranked Mount Desert Island and reigning state champion John Bapst.

The Trojans may be young, but they have been running with poise all season, having steamrolled through the pack at the Festival of Champions earlier this month.

MDI breezed to the Hancock County championship last weekend, and its top seven includes four sophomores, two juniors and a freshman.

Bapst’s frontrunners will need to break up the Trojans’ pack if the Crusaders are to defend their conference crown. Sisters Adrienne and Mary Carmack, along with freshman Seraphina Provenzano, will be counted upon to run strong.

Aleta Looker of Ellsworth is having an outstanding campaign, and she’ll be the favorite individually.

Orono was the top EM Class C team at FOC two weeks ago, and the Riots are looming as the conference favorites.
