Class A

Abbey Leonardi will be shooting for her 3rd regional title in 4 tries. The senior has dominated the competition this fall, at this point it look like she'll be on her own to chase a fast time. If anyone is to run with Leonardi it figures to be Emily Durgin of Cheverus. Durgin was the runner-up last year, but has been battling a low iron count recently, and may opt for a safe race plan instead of chasing Abbey. Durgin's teammates Shannon Conley, Fiona Hendry & Kiera Murray all figure to battle it out for a top 5 spot with Charlotte Pierce (TA), Nyajock Pan (South Portland) & Jocelyn Acheson(Massabesic) right in the mix. Other top 10 returners from 2010 are Samantha Cox (BE), Mikayla Frazier (Mass), & Laura Broderick (Kennebunk) who proved last year they know how to get it done in a big race.

Teams based on athlete's best performance for 5k during the 2011 season

Defending Regional & State champion Cheverus is the clear cut favorite to repeat, they had 4 of the top 6 last year, can they repeat that feat? Massabesic has been the #2 team all year, they have a very strong top 3 that should lead them to a runner-up finish. Windham looks to be the next best team, last year they surprised everyone at the regional meet that won't happen this year as they have established a strong program. The top 8 teams will move on to the state meet look for Bonny Eagle, South Portland, McAuley, Portland, Kennebunk, Marshwood & Scarborough to contend for a spot in the state meet,

Class C

Defending champion Martha Veroneau (Waynflete) is looking to make it two in a row, she was the top Class C runner at the WMC championship and ran under 21 at Twinbrook 2 weeks ago. MVC Champion Meagan Thomas of Lisbon is coming on strong at the end of the year, she took the conference title last week by 18 seconds over Sophia Thayer (Boothbay). Teagan Wu (Merriconeag) is one to watch along with Hillary Detert (NYA) they finished as the 2-3 runners from Class at conference championship. From the MVC keep an eye on Natalie Bolduc (Dirigo) & Bronte Elias (Madison).

Only five teams will move on to the state meet so the competition for those spots should be tight. Waynflete is the defending champion, while Merriconeag Waldorf is the favorite. Merriconeag dominated the Class C teams at the WMC championship, this despite their #1 runner dropping out of the race. Monmouth won the MVC title by 12 over Lisbon, both teams will be in the mix on Saturday. The 5th spot should come down to St Dom's, NYA, Boothbay & Madison

Class B

Defending champion Abby Mace of Maranacook will try to rebound from a subpar race at the KVAC championship last week.  WMC champion Kristina Smith, a freshman from Poland hopes to duplicate her success from last week. Don't count out Heather Evans of York who was 2nd to Smith at WMC's or Kirstin Sandreuterof Greely who'll hvae homec ourse advantage. Also Madeline Roberts of Falmouth has shown over the past few weeks she can run with the top girls. This should be the best individual race up front with a handful of girls capable of winning, whoever can transition well from downhill to uphill will have a big edge.

Teams based on athlete's best performance for 5k during the 2011 season

Cape Elizabeth has won an impressive 8 straight regional titles, they'll look to take that total to 9 in a row on Saturday. The Capers took the WMC title last weekend, despite not having #2 runner Tori Brigham in the lineup, Brigham will be back this week, and will give Cape a big boost. Falmouth who was the runner-up at WMC's wasn't at full strength last week with Abby Payson out and Molly Paris struggling, the Yachtsmen beat the capers 2 weeks ago at Twinbrook so they should have confidence they can do it again. Don't count out Greely who had their best race of the season at WMC's finishing 3rd just 4 points back of Falmouth. York is a team not to overlook. 7 total teams will punch their ticket to the state meet. Freeport, Maranacook, Yarmouth, Morse should be the 4 teams fighting for those final spots.
