Before this fall, Camden Hills and Washburn weren't known as cross country powers, as the Windjammers didn't win a race as a team in 2010, while the Beavers didn't even have a squad prior to last fall.
Fans of both programs had plenty to celebrate Saturday, as Camden Hills edged Mount Desert Island to claim the Class B championship while Washburn breezed to its first-ever Class C crown on a cool, crisp afternoon at Troy Howard Middle School.
MDI and Camden Hills entered Saturday's action ranked 2-3 in the coaches' poll, and the Windjammers took advantage of their strength up front, as Brittany Bowman and Willow Parker finished second and third to thwart the Trojans' strong pack and post a 51-52 victory.
The performances of Bowman and Parker, along with 3-4-5 runners Emily Lopez, Lily Kassen and Samantha Morse who came on strong late to finish 10th, 17th and 21st, negated an MDI pack which placed all five of its scoring runners between seventh and 13th place.
After learning the Windjammers had won, coach Becky Flanagan raced over to tell her girls, who subsequently squealed and jumped around.
Also qualifying for next weekend's state championships at Twin Brook in Cumberland were John Bapst, Caribou, Waterville and Ellsworth.
Bethanie Brown of Waterville cruised to the victory in the individual competition, posting a time of 18:59.74.
In Class C, Carsyn Koch of Washburn was the top individual in 20:28.46 while Carmen Bragg placed fourth as the Beavers overtook Orono 41 points to 56.
Koch, who won individual regional and state championships last spring, was exuberant at her team's accomplishment.
"We just have so much heart on our team," Koch said. "I think every race every person has surprised themselves with their time."
Mackenzie Worcester, a freshman, was the other Washburn runner in the top 10, finishing seventh.
Also qualifying for states were Bucksport and George Stevens Academy.
And in Class A, Mount Ararat rebounded from a tough effort at KVACs in cruising past Brunswick, 36-52.
Aiding the Eagles' efforts were Kelly Lynch and Emma Wood, who finished 4-5. Joining the Eagles and Dragons in Cumberland will be Mt. Blue, Hampden, Brewer, Lewiston and Bangor.
Lawrence's Erzsie Nagy posted the day's quickest time in completing the course in 18:51.25.
The last time the Bangor boys cross country team captured an Eastern Maine Class A championship, a former Razorback was President and one of the Rams' top runners was a tall, skinny kid named Adam Goode.
That was back in 2000.
A generation later, a new group of Rams celebrated their first regional crown in more than a decade and at the center of the group was first-year head coach Goode.
Bangor bounced back from a tough performance at KVAC's last weekend to eke out a 91-103 victory over Mount Ararat at Troy Howard Middle School, becoming the first EM Class A school north of Augusta to win an Eastern Maine championship since Brewer in 2001.
Caribou and Bangor Christian retained their regional crowns in Classes B and C.
In Class A, Jonathan Stanhope was the only Bangor runner to crack the top 10 with his 10th-place run, but four other Rams finished in the top 25 in David Correale (15th), Jonathan Belanger (18th), Jacob Archer (23rd) and Caleb Halvorson-Fried (24th).
Also qualifying for next weekend's state championship meet in Cumberland were Messalonskee, Lewiston, Hampden Academy and Brunswick.
Messalonskee's Harlow Ladd posted a winning effort of 16:41.34 over 3.1 miles.
In Class B, Caribou edged Ellsworth for the second time in as many weeks, with the Vikings tucking all five scorers in the top 20 to post a 55-59 victory.
Two of those runners, Caleb Chapman (4th) and Ron Lund (7th), earned top 10 finishes.
Ellsworth was fueled by the effort of individual champ Dan Curts, who won going away in 16:41.90.
Joining the Vikings and Eagles at the state championships will be John Bapst, MDI, Waterville, Winslow, Presque Isle and Medomak Valley.
And in Class C, Bangor Christian breezed to a 33-77 victory over second-place Orono, as four Patriots claimed top-10 positions.
Sam Proctor led the way with a fourth-place run, and trailing him were teammates Zac Palmeter (5th), Dylan Merchant (7th) and Seth Pearson (8th).
Mattanawcook Academy's Matt Guiod posted a winning time of 17:27.54, and also qualifying for states were Guiod's Lynx, Sumner and Central.
The top 30 boys and girls individuals in all three classes also qualified for state championship meets.
