MaineTrackXC Sophomore Boys 2011 Rewind
The Class of 2014 had a successful campaign in 2011, nabbing several top positions in conference, regional, state & new england races. The top 2 sophomores were the top 2 freshman last year. Ellsworth's Dan Curts had another outstanding season that resulted in a Eastern Maine Regional title, 3rd place finish at the Class B State meet, & capped off by a 19th place finish at the New England championships to earn All-NE honors. Following in his footsteps was Josef Holt (Telstar) who had another strong year and great championship season. Holt finished 3rd in the Class Regional & State meet behind Footlocker National qualifier Matt McClintock & All- New England runner Chase Brown. Josef went on to finish 28th at the NE's & nabbed a 39th in the Footlocker NE regional, he was the 2nd best sophomore in the race.
Another standout sophomore was Jonathan Stanhope of Bangor who led his Bangor team to the Eastern Maine Regional title & Class A state runner-up trophy. Stanhope finished as the 4th best sophomore overall. Also Ian Morris of Scarborough played a key role in Scarborough defending their Class A state title, Morris was the #2 runner for the Red Storm, he notched the 10th fastest time for the clas sof 2014.
2012 should be another big year for this talented class as they enter their junior seasons.
Top Sophomore Dan Curts
Dan Curts (Ellsworth) won 6 races this fall including the Eastern Maine Class B Regional. Curts really stepped up at the state meet where he pursued Silas Eatsman & Tim Follo before finishing a strong 3rd, running 16:38.43 on the tough Twin Brook course in the mud, his time was 3 seconds faster than he ran on the Belfast course at Regionals. Curts ended his season on a high note with a personal best 16:19 clocking at the New England champion good for 19th overall & All-New England honors. Dan will be one of the top returners statewide next year, if he can get a summer of training under his belt, watch out!
Josef Holt
Josef Andrews (Telstar) followed up his freshman campaign with another strong year in 2011. Andrews won just one race this fall but often had to race Matt McClintock or Chase Brown during the regular season. Andrews was strong in the postseason nabbing 4th at the Western Maine Regional, then improving one spot at the Class C state meet where he finished 3rd for the second year in a row. Josef had one of his best races of the season at the New England Chmapionships where he finished 28th just 3 spots outside of All-NE honors, he did run a personal best 16:28 for 5k. He finished out his season with a 39th place finish at the Footlocker Northeast Regional, overlal he was the 2nd best sophomore in the elite race. With McClintock & Brown graduating Josef will be aiming for his first state individual title next fall.
Peter Doane
Peter Doane (Cape) steadily improved throughout the season & had a great post-season run in the championship races. While Doane didn't win a race this fall he was consistently in the top 8 of most races he ran in. Peter finished 6th in the WMC Championship, then followed that up with a 6th place finish at the Western Maine Regional leading his team to a runner-up finish. He followed that up with an 8th place finish at the Class B State championship running a personal best on the Twin Brook course. Doane had the 3rd fastest time for a sophomore at the state meet, & had the 21st fastest time with the 3 classses combined earning him a trip to the New England. Peter finished his seaosn out with a personal best 17:25 finishing 141st at the New England's. He'll be one of the top returners in Class B next fall.
