The SMAA opened it's inaugural season @ USM with a great opening season meet that featured the defending outdoor champions Bonny Eagle & the defending indoor champions Scarborough along with Gorham, Deering, South Portland & Thornton Academy in an early season showdown. Scarborough girls led by just 1 heading into the relays but surged ahead with wins in both 4x200's to hold of Thornton Academy 153-132, Bonny Eagle was 3rd with 103.5. On the boys side Gorham & Scarborough went back and forth all night before the Red Storm pulled ahead late for the 158-148 win, Cheverus was 3rd with 100 points
Individually there were some excellent marks considering how early it is in the season. The top performance on the girls went to Sarah Perkins of Gorham in the 55m Hurdles, Perkins blitzed the field in 8.60 to win, the time is faster than anyone in the state of Maine ran last year,the mark qualifies here for the state meet as well as the New Balance indoor nationals Emerging Elite race. Other big marks were Nicole Kirk of Scarborough who ran 7.61 in the 55m as well as 27.25 in the 200m. On the boys side the Sr. 55m hurdles race was outstanding with 8 athletes hitting the state qualifying standards. Leading the way was the Bonny Eagle duo of Tyson Goodale (8.20) & Kyle Bailey (8.38). Goodale was a triple winner with his win in the LJ (20-2) & leg on the victorious 4x200m Relay.
