PRINCETON, N.J. (12/10/11) - Senior Dave Slovenski set an Ivy League record in the pole vault as the Princeton men's track & field team opened the 2011-12 indoor season hosting the New Years Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 10 at Jadwin Gym.

The three-time Ivy League indoor champion cleared 5.37 meters (17-7.25) taking down his previous personal best of 5.30 (17-4.75). Slovenski earned second-team All-America honors the last time he competed in the pole vault, at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

"It was truly a tremendous jump," head coach Fred Samara said of Slovenski's record-breaking vault. "To do it this early in the season is extraordinary."

Sophomore Tom Hopkins was a double winner, taking first in both the 300-meter dash and the long jump. He ran 34.53 in the 300, the only runner of 37 to clock in in under 35 seconds. He went on to win the long jump with a mark of 7.31 meters. Classmate Shane Molidor was third in the same event, reaching 7.20 meters.

Continuing with the jumps, freshman Nana Owusu-Nyanteky was fourth in the triple jump reaching 14.76 and sophomore Omar Jarrett was fourth in the high jump clearing 14.76.

Junior Richard Sheldon was the runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles and freshman Rob Mohr was third at 8.28 and 8.30, respectively. In the 60-meter dash, freshman Tommaso Greenbaum ran a 7.07 to take fifth place. Also posting a fifth-place finish was senior Jordan Sawadogo in the 600, with a time of 1:22.11.

Seniors Kashif Smith and Ricky Kearney, along with freshman Daniel McCord and Sawadogo made up Princeton's 4x400 that was third, lapping the track in 3:22.60.

In the throws, senior Patrick Park was the victor in the shot put throwing to 17.02 meters. In the same event freshman Scott Rushton was fifth reaching 14.69. Sophomore Jake Taylor was fourth in the weight throw throwing to 14.47.

The meet served as a great tune-up before Princeton begins regular weekly competition in January. The next meet is a dual at Navy on Jan. 7.
