Three years ago Greely swept the Western Maine Conference championship indoor track meet, winning the boys’ and girls’ titles.
And while a replay today may not be likely, Coach John Folan is confident about his girls’ chances.

In fact, Folan is hoping the meet at 4:30 p.m. today at the University of Southern Maine is the perfect primer for the state Class B meet Feb. 20.
“On the girls’ side we are favored to win by quite a bit, which is nice. But the kids will tell you we don’t talk about team titles. It’s not a forbidden subject, but we try to get away from points and focus on quality performance,” Folan said.
The Greely girls last won the state meet in 2008, so none of the current athletes recalls the victory, least of all the standout distance runner, sophomore Kirstin Sandreuter.
But already Greely knows how to lead the state. The Rangers are ranked in the top three in 7 of 14 events in Class B.
And in Sandreuter, it has the second-best miler and 2-miler in Class B. She’s already posted times that have broken league and school records.
Sandreuter ran 5 minutes, 12.70 seconds in the mile Jan. 6 to put her second in the state in the event. And her 2-mile time of 11:15.36 was run Feb. 3 after she clocked a 2:23.23 in the 800 meters, putting her third in the state in the event.
“Three of her top times are in the last four weeks. We expect her to keep improving,” Folan said.
The Rangers also have Cassidy Storey, who is ranked first in the shot put with a throw of 33 feet, 8.25 inches; and Abby Bonnevie, the top-ranked pole vaulter with a height of 9-6.
Storey has yet to throw her best this season while Bonnevie has shown consistency, Folan said.
The Greely girls were runners-up last year at the state Class B championship, and if everything goes well for them, and things don’t go perfectly for Waterville, they have a shot at the title in two weeks.
They’re not talking about this goal. But as they tune up today for the state meet, they are thinking about it.
“We have a lot of one and two’s,” Folan said of the top- ranked track athletes in the state.
“But to defeat Waterville, I think we need help. Other schools with sprinters could help upset Waterville. I’m not always rooting for other teams to do well but that could help us out.”
