New Gloucester, Maine – Amanda Peterson (Gray – New Gloucester High School) will be a Wheaton Lyon in 2012.  Her decision to choose Wheaton College was made after a lengthy recruiting process.

She has received scholarship offers from NCAA Division I, II and III schools across the country, including URI, UMass Amherst, New Mexico State and others.  Amanda was flown to Minnesota this winter (Gustavis) and has visited several other Universities in the last few months.  Maine schools that showed a strong interest included Bates, USM, UMO and Husson.  She made her final decision after much deliberation and discussion with her parents, coaches, advisors and fellow student athletes. Her decision to choose Wheaton was a combination of scholarship, academic, athletic and career path opportunities.

Amanda’s resume is impressive. In addition to her strong SAT scores and high GPA she is a champion sprinter from Maine.  Winning three State Championships and several Western Maine Conference Championships, she was selected All-Conference 1st Team for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 indoor track and field seasons.  She was the 2010 and 2011 Most Valuable Female Athlete in the Western Maine Conference indoor track seasons, and named Sun Journal’s 2011 Indoor Track athlete of the year.  In 2012 she was awarded her second Patriot Award from Gray-New Gloucester High School where she set several school records in track and will graduate with honors this spring.

Amanda Peterson is a class act.  A well rounded student who has a passion for science and the arts, Amanda has worked as a professional model and actor, performed in school plays and chorus and is determined to fulfill her desire to contribute to the world as a scientist.  She has been a leader in the community and a role model.  Her performance on and off the track will be an inspiration to all who follow her.

She will join GNG Patriot Alumni Ben Micklovich at Wheaton who is a top 10 sprinter in NCAA Division III and his younger brother Sam who has also chosen to attend Wheaton in the fall of 2012.  Amanda will major in Chemistry at Wheaton College in Norton, MA – where she will be a valued member of the women’s track and field teams.
