SKOWHEGAN — The result of the eighth annual Community Cup track meet was the same as the first seven, wins for both the Waterville Senior High School girls and boys teams. Even with some of the top athletes in the area absent, including Waterville sprinter Georgia Bolduc and Messalonskee distance star Harlow Ladd, a number of others used the meet as an opportunity to tune up for next week’s Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship meet.
The Waterville girls scored 163 points, followed by Winslow (88) and Lawrence (78.25). The Waterville boys also had 163 points, with Lawrence (103) second and Messalonskee (52) third.

Lawrence’s Erzsie Nagy set meet records in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs. Nagy won the 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 18.39 seconds, but in the 1,600, she was dominant. Nagy’s time of 4:58.35 shaved 30 seconds off the old Community Cup record, set by Waterville’s Cynthia Hunter at the inaugural meet in 2005.
Breaking the five minute mark has been a goal of Nagy’s since she started running track two years ago.
“I knew I was going to be disappointed if I didn’t (break five minutes),” Nagy said.
While Nagy shattered the meet record in the 1,600, Winslow’s Alliyah Veilleux set the mark in the 100 by the slimmest of margins. Veilleux ran the sprint in 12.89, just better than the old mark set by Waterville’s Bolduc (12.90) two years ago.
Even without Bolduc, the girls 100 was one of the most anticipated races of the day. Veilleux took the lead early, and held off Lawrence’s Sasha Letourneau over the final 30 meters.
“I heard her behind me and I gave it all I had left,” Veilleux said. “I wish (Bolduc) would have been here. She and Sasha are great and we always push each other.”
Waterville’s Olivia Thurston finished first in the 300 hurdles and the 200, and was second to teammate Alex Jensen in the 100 hurdles. Thurston felt a strong headwind during the 300 hurdles kept her winning time, 48.56, down.
“I’m trying to get 46 at KVACs, and hopefully 44, 45 at states,” Thurston said.
Skowhegan’s Jacob Weese won the boys 100 and 200. His time of 11.49 in the 100 was just enough to best the time set by former teammate Garrett Nelson (11.50).
“My goal coming in was to beat his time,” Weese, who won the 200 in 23.71, said.
Nick Margitza of Waterville set a pair of meet records in throwing events. Margitza won the shot with a throw of 51 feet, 10.5 inches. Margitza’s discus throw of 137-6 also was a Community Cup record.
Waterville’s Devin Burgess won the pole vault (13-0), the 300 hurdles (44.63) and the long jump (19-4.75). Waterville’s Troy Gurski was a double winner in the triple jump (40-5) and the 110 hurdles (16.28).
Jensen won the 100 hurdles (15.08), triple jump (35-11.5) and the long jump (17-2.5) for Waterville.
