The Waterville track and field teams did what most expected them to do at the eighth annual Community Cup: Roll to impressive victories.

But that didn’t mean the competition came up short.

On the contrary, actually.

“It was the same old, same old with the results,” Lawrence coach Tim Alberts said, “but there was some good competition and some good results.”

Meet records also fell.

Lawrence junior Erzsie Nagy shattered the meet record in the 1,600-meter with a time of 4 minutes, 58.35 seconds. Waterville’s Cynthia Hunter set the record in 2005.

Winslow sprinter Alliyah Veilleux (100), Waterville senior Nick Margitza (shot put, discus) and Waterville junior Bethanie Brown (3,200) also set meet records.

The Lawrence boys also accomplished a first at the meet, scoring more than 100 points for the first time. The Bulldogs also finished second in the meet for the first time in program history.

“We had a great meet,” Alberts said. “Everything came together.”

Mason Travers led the Lawrence charge. He won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches and finished second in the long jump (19-1.5). Travers finished second in the 110 hurdles (17.34) and third in the 300 hurdles (47.12).

Lawrence captain Tim Dudley won the 400 (52.81) and was second in the 200 (24.09). He also helped the 4×100 relay to victory, finishing in 46.39.

“Tim Dudley remains undefeated in the 400,” Alberts said. “The kids were very happy with what they were able to do.”

Mt. Ararat High School hosted a last chance qualifier Monday evening, and several central Maine schools showed with hopes of boosting their squads for the state championship meets.

The conference championship meets are this weekend, beginning with the Mountain Valley Conference on Friday, and entries were due Sunday.

Maine Central Institute coach Jason Allen said he sent a strong contingent to Topsham.

“We had 25ish here,” he said. “It’s a great last meet.”

Cony co-coach Shawn Totman agreed, saying, “We have half our team here. We have a lot of athletes who are close to qualifying. It’s a great meet for the kids. There really isn’t a lot of pressure. It’s a laid-back meet.”

Messalonskee sophomore Amanda Knight is one of the top sprinters in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference.

She’s routinely won the 100, 200 and 400 at a variety of meets this spring and is one of the team’s top scorers.

However, her availability at the KVAC A meet Saturday in Bath is questionable after she suffered a hamstring injury at the Community Cup.

“We’ll see what happens over the week,” Messalonskee coach Scott Wilson said. “Losing Amanda early in the meet hurt. Hopefully, we’ll get everyone going for the KVAC meet. We’ll have to see.”

The Winslow girls once again are fielding strong relay teams, particularly the 4×400 and 4×800.

The 4×800 team of Erica Bertolaccini, Bethany Winkin, Molly Schassberger and Sara Poirier set a school record with a time of 11:13.92.

“We’ve always had decent relays,” Winslow coach Shawn Carey said. “We take pride in them.”

The 4×400 relay team finished second to Messalonskee at the Cup.

The Black Raiders have one of three fastest times in the conference (4:47.37).

Bertolaccini, Winkin, Lauren Schassberger and Sarah Fowler comprised the team last weekend.

Carey said sprinter Autumn Poulin could also see time in the relay as well.

“We’re still moving kids around,” Carey said. “We have one of the top three relay teams in the conference.”
