AUGUSTA — Matt McClintock wanted to defend his Mountain Valley Conference titles in the distance events and break a few records Friday in the process.

The Madison senior did just that, setting meet records in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs at Alumni Field.

“I wanted to defend my titles and I knew some conference records were well within my reach,” McClintock said. “Before this I didn’t have anything but school records. It feels great.”

While McClintock broke records, Lisbon extended its reign of conference dominance. The Greyhounds boys and girls teams swept the meet for the seventh consecutive season.

The girls scored 181 points to crush the field. Madison was second with 66 points. The Lisbon boys scored 136.5 points to finished well ahead of Hall-Dale, which finished with 106.5.

“It’s hard to do it once but to do it seven times you have to have a lot of seniors who don’t want to be the ones to lose,” Lisbon coach Dean Hall said. “We came through.”

McClintock set meet records in the 1,600 (4 minutes, 21.24 seconds) and 3,200 (9:18.58).

“I had some good competition,” said McClintock, who once again fended off Boothbay’s Chase Brown. “It was a good day.”

It was also a good day for Mt. Abram junior Sadie James, who wanted to run the 1,600 and 3,200 pain-free after a knee injury suffered during the Nordic ski season threatened to derail her track and field season.

She won both events easily, finishing the 1,600 in 5:32.54 and the 3,200 in 11:51.35 despite running on a taped-up right knee. She was limited in both events this spring after tweaking some tendons in a fall at the Class B championship ski meet in February.

“It’s always in the back of my mind,” James said. “It’s like, ‘Please don’t start hurting.’ This was just the third time I’ve run the (1,600) this year and the second time I’ve run the (3,200). It’s been upsetting because I love running the 1,600 and 3,200. It’s definitely been a growing year for me.”

It’s been a dominant year for McClintock, who will attend Purdue University in the fall.

The senior ran a personal best in the 1,600 despite running into a strong headwind down the home stretch.

McClintock then shattered the meet record in the 3,200 by more than 30 seconds. Former Hall-Dale runner Wade Davis set the previous mark in 2008 with a time of 9:50.53.

“There’s a lot of good competition here,” said McClintock, who finished second in the 800. “It’s nice to get some of the records. It’s nice that I’ll be remembered for something. This is the fastest time I’ve ran the (1,600). The competition was great and they really pushed me.”

Also Friday, Madison’s Monica Ouellette won the 100 hurdles in 18 seconds.

The Carrabec boys 4×100 relay team, comprised of Israel Davis, Elliot Gorr, John Layman and Hunter Williams, finished first with a time of 48.11.

The Hall-Dale boys challenged Lisbon throughout the event. The Bulldogs received a big day from Tyler Fitzgerald, who won the 100 (11:37) and 400 (52.87).

“We battled all day,” Hall-Dale coach Jarod Richmond said. “We knew we’d be down early in the field events but we didn’t get down. We battled. We knew we’d have to have a perfect day and that would be tough.

“We brought 14 boys here and tried to do what nobody had done in six years.”

Hall-Dale senior Bri Crisci (100, 200 and 400 ) and Lisbon senior Morgan Reeves (pole vault, triple jump and long jump) won three events.
