The Lewiston Blue Devils boys xc team has big aspirations in the 2012 as they are coming off a strong summer of training according to Coach TJ Niles. Lewiston finished 8th overall in the Class A state meet last fall, they return 5 of their top 7 including individual title threat Mohamed Barre. On paper Lewiston is the 3rd best team in Class A but if a much improved Mohamed Mohamed can translate his road 5k to the xc course they could do much better than that. Interestingly enough three of the Blue Devils runners are named Mohamed, while the other two runners in the top 5 are brothers. It's been 5 years since the Blue Devils won a state title, and leading the way back then was another Mohamed, Mohamed Noor. Lewiston has been 4th the past 2 years in the Eastern Maine Regional, looks like they could challenge for the top spot this fall.
Coach Niles says....
The boys return 5 of the top 7. Mohamed Barre(SR), Mohamed Mohamed(JR), Mohamed Awil(SR), Andrew Balsamo(SR), and Jordan Balsamo(SR). The boys put in more miles they they have ever have before this summer. Barre is looking for individual honors this season. While Mohamed who put in the most work this summer and has shown huge improvement on the road this summer looks to still his thunder. Awil ran 17:25 last year in his first running season of his life and cant be counted out. The Balsamo twins are looking to compete the top 5 with getting under that 18min barrier this season. Ramadan has one more week to go so by the third week of the season the boys should be ready to go. But there looks to be a fight for the 6th and 7th runners for the team this year with maybe just one clear winner Isaiah Harris(SO) who should make varsity.
Isaiah Harris(SO) who made some noise while in middle school finds his way onto the team looking to see what impact he can make on varsity his first season.
The boys are looking for individual and team honors this season. Starting with KVAC and Regional titles and then seeing what they can throw down at the State Championship.
I am already very proud of the work my kids put in this summer and know no matter what they will be better than last year.
