Conference Championship Week: KVAC Preview

KVAC Championship Preview

Meet Page

The KVAC will invade Cony HS on Saturday for the XC Championship meet. One thing is for sure, the course will make the runners work, and the weather from the past couple of weeks should ensure a wet track. With that in mind the competition will be high. On the team side the Class A boys meet features #1 Lewiston, #7 Bangor, #8 Mt Blue, #10 Mt Ararat & #12 Hampden. In the Class A girls meet, team to watch our for are #8 Mt Ararat & #11 Hampden. While the Class B meet has #3 Camden Hills & #5 Waterville. Individually the top girls runner in the state Bethanie Brown will compete, along with other top runner Erzsebet Nagy & Brittany Bowman.  The boys meet features Jonathan Stanhope, Mohamed Barre, Justin Tracy & Ben Trapini

Class A Boys

There are a handful of invidividuals that will contend for the KVAC Class A title. Right now Jonathan Stanhope of Bangor has the fastest time of the year at 16:24.6, he was 4th a year ago. He'll have his hands full with Mohamed Barre of Lewiston, who is rounding into top form at the right time. Mt. Blue's Justin Tracy took the best of Stanhope during the 2.03 mile Mt. Blue Relays last week, he's had a very consistent 2012. Tracy's teammate Josh Horne has exploded onto the scence this fall, don't count him out he's on a roll. Others to watch for are Mohamed Mohamed, Mohamed Awil, & Isaiah Harris of Lewiston, along with Sam Wood of Mt. Ararat & Nick Kopf of Hampden Academy all are capable of making a run at a top 5 finish.

The #1 ranked Lewiston Blue Devils looked primed to win the team title with 4 of the top 11 individuals. If anyone is to challenge them it will Bangor & Mt. Blue. The Rams may be best suited to make a run at Lewiston as they have quality and depth, while Mt. Blue has a powerful top 3, they'll need a big effort out of their #5 runners to challenge. Don't count out Mt. Ararat & Hampden Academy they have strong teams capable of a top 5 finish.

Class B Boys

Camden Hills Ben Trapani has put together a great junior year, heading into the KVAC meet he is the heavy favorite to win the Class B title and challenge for the overall win. Trapani was the top Class B runner at the Festival of Champions (FOC) two weeks ago. Other contenders are Chris Cote (WTVL), Nick Shuckrow (Winslow), Nick Smelcer (Lincoln Academy) & Christian Heath (Gardiner).

Maranacook is the favorite to take the team title as they are seeded with 45 points, while the Black Bears don't have a front runner they do have a quality pack with a 47 second spread. The battle for the runner-up position should be a tight one with Lincoln Academy, Winslow & Morse.

Class A Girls

The individual race is Erzsbet Nagy's to lose, the defending Class A champion has raced sparingly in 2012 due to injury, but when she has toed the line she has been dynamic. Expect more of the same from Nagy as she looks to defend her title, hee best time fo 18:33.7 almost 1:20 faster than the #2 seed.  After Nagy, Kylee Parker (Hampden Acad) & Tess Cassidy of Brunswick are the other two runners who have broken 20 minutes. Other contenders are Tiffany Tanner (Brunswick), Kelly Lynch (Mt. A) & Elizabeth Labun (Hampden Acad) all capable of making a run at a top 5 finish.

The team title looks to be a 3 team race with Hampden Academy, Mt. Ararat & Brunswick all with a shot at taking home first place. Hampden is the favorite based on times from 2012. Mt Ararat who finished 2nd by just a point last year is primed to make a run at first. Don't count out Brunswick, they have the best top 3, but need their #4 & #5 runners to step up to challenge for first.

Class B Girls

Waterville senior Bethanie Brown is the clear favorite to repeat as Class B champion, and overall winner. Brown has been phenomal all year, breaking several course records, she's the only runner in the field that has run under 18 minutes for 5k. Earlier this season Brown races on the Cony course running an impressive 18:35, now that we are in championship season expect her to improve upon that performance.

There are many other strong runners in the field including defending Class B state champion Brittany Bowman (Camden Hills), Bowman should be the runner-up but will be pushed by Caroline Colan of Maranacook, Abby Hersom (Oceanside), & Molly Schassberger (Winslow). All 3 are capable of taking the runner-up spot.

#3 ranked Camden Hills is the team favorite, the Windjammers have 5 of the top 9 5k times in the field. The Purple Panthers of Waterville are the next best team. Maranacook & Winslow also have a shot at a top 3 finish.
