On a brisk breezy day at the Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast, 6 State Championships were awarded. In Class A we saw a sweep as the Scarborough Red Storm won both boys & girls titles convincingly. In Class B, the boys from Greely were tops as they ran to an impressive win, while on the girl’s side it was Cape Elizabeth dominating the rest of the competition. In Class C, Monmouth Academy surprised everyone to take the title, while it was a repeat for the Waynflete girls. Individually it was a day for repeats, surprises, close finishes and the youth movement. To start the day off Wade Davis (Hall-Dale) won his 2nd straight Class C title. On the girls side it was Adele Espy (Waynflete) adding another state champion to her collection. In Class A boys Will Geoghegan (Brunswick) held on by .26 seconds to win over Nate Hathaway (Scarborough). On the girls side freshman Abbey Leonardi was pushed all the way by another freshman Emily Durgin, to come away with her state championship and the fastest time of the day, 18:04. In Class B boys, Alex Moser (York) was the surprise winner as he bested pre-race favorite Matt Rand (Cape) by 11 seconds. On the girls side it was another outstanding freshman, Abby Mace (Maranacook) who ran to her first state championship. Class A Girls Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) 18:03 *fastest time of the day Team: Scarborough-85 points Class A Boys Will Geoghegan (Brunswick) 16:16.4 over Nate Hathaway 16:16.66 in the closest race of the day Team: Scarborough- 62 points Class B Girls Abby Mace (Maranacook) 18:48 Team: Cape Elizabeth: 36 points Class B Boys Alex Moser (York) 16:04 *fastest time of the day Team: Greely-38 points Class C Girls Adele Espy (Waynflete) 19:04 *2nd straight title Team: Waynflete- 49 points Class C Boys Wade Davis (Hall-Dale) 16:40 *2nd straight title Team: Monmouth Academy- 72 points
