Leonardi inches closer to record in 1600m with her 4:58.1 Derek Veilleux May 4, 2009

  Freshman Abbey Leonardi took another crack at the 1600m today at South portland, She improved her personal best to 4:58.1, inching closer to the all-time state best of 4:57.27. Abbey went through the 800 in 2:26 battling the ever present wind of the water on the South Portland track. The freshman has run just three individual races this spring, is saving her legs for the end of the season. She won't run in the Scarborough Relays on Friday, honoring an agreement with her coach to only race once a week. The future is very bright for Leonardi. The meet at South portland also featured a new state leader in the 3200m by star freshman Emily Durgin of Bonny Eagle, who clocked 11:18.6 to notch an automate state qualifier and new state best by over 30 seconds. Earlier in the meet she led her Bonny Eagle team to victory in the 4x800 over a strong Scarborough team with a 2:20 split. Also, the meet featured the 2nd fastest 800m in the state behind Leonardi's 2:18, as Whitney Chamberlain (Scarborough) clocked 2:20.4 as she won by 18 seconds. Whitney finished the meet by anchoring the top 4x400 in the state to victory in 4:17.5   Meet Results
