Last Saturday our team had a nice post-workout workout. It was the annual Waterville Track bottle drive where all of the track athletes, some parents, and Coach Wilson gather around a map and prepare to divide and conquer the city of Waterville. We break into groups and take different sections of the city so that from nine in the morning until noon we can make sure we have gathered all the possible bottles that we could beg for, borrow, or steal. Just kidding about the borrowing and stealing. But we walk from house to house, up and down steps, and in and out of driveways, knocking at people’s doors to receive no answer, or if someone answers, to say ENTHUSIASTICALLY, “Hi! We’re from the Waterville Track team. Do you have any bottles to donate?” It’s great fun.

It was warm and sunny last year for the bottle drive, but this year it was pretty chilly. Fortunately my group had some nice snacks provided by my mom: pretzels, animal crackers, granola bars, Gatorade, and fruit. When we stopped by the bottle redemption center to drop off a vanload of bottles, we were chatting outside and then we questioned, “Why are we standing out here shivering? Let’s get in the van and eat snacks!” So we climbed into the van and enjoyed a nice break while my dad talked to Coach Wilson. But soon enough we had to get back to work again. At the end of the day, though, we had a HUGE pile of bottles. Overall, it was a successful day, and a fabulous extra workout! (Thanks to everyone who donated bottles!)

Wednesday’s post-workout workout? Raking and cleaning the track to prepare for the Waterville Relays. Those of you who are planning to attend can look forward to track that’s spic and span!
