State Champion spotlight: Trever Gray Waterville
Waterville junior Trever Gray won his first individual state title on Monday as he captured the Class B shot put title with a heave of 52-2 1/4. We caught up with Trever to ask him a few questions about his preparation before the meet, as well as what was going through his mind on meet day, as well as what we can look forward to in the outdoor season from Gray.
What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?
While preparing for the state meet we worked on the front half of the rotation. A big trap people fall into is throwing too many times leading up to states. We really focused on staying relaxed.
How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?
I really wanted to treat the state meet like any other meet, I didn't want to get too worked up. I just tried to have some fun with it.
How did you feel after the your final throw?
I certainly felt satisfied after my final throw, for winning a state title in the shot put. On the other hand, I know I can do better.
Coming into the season what were your goals and did you achieve them?
Coming into the season my main goal was to win a state title. Practice and preparation has been great lately, with New England's this weekend I hope to break that 55 foot mark.
How do you think winning an individual state title will effect you heading into outdoors?
Heading into outdoors with a state championship under my belt feels very relieving, it definitely is a weight off of my shoulders. It will effect me by motivation. It will keep me pushing myself and continue to throw farther with every throw.
