It's True, AR 5k road record
Ben True of Saucony is back, and back in a big way. The 29 year old Hanover, NH resident toed the line for the B.A.A 5K this morning against a strong field. True, who entered the race as a two time winner, he finished as the runner-up a year ago, was looking to win again. With the elimination of two 90 degree turns in the course, the already fast course became that must faster. And True delivered with a new American 5k road race record with his winning effort of 13:22. The win wasn't easy as he had to battle the hottest road racer on the circuit, Stephen Sambu, all the way to the line, Sambu was a step back in 13:23. The previous American 5K record was 13:24 set by Marc Davis run at the Carlsbad 5K in 1996.
The win for True was his third overall, he also won in
(2011 & 2012), earned him $7,500 for first plus the $5,000 bonus for the American record. A year ago, True finished second in the race as he ran the same time as winner Dejen Gebremeskel 13:26.
