Lombardo & Sholl win Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Patriots Day Race

Westbrook senior Josh Lombardo won the 68th annual Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Patriots Day Road Race in a time of 11:11 this morning for 2.2 mile course. Lombardo who finished fourth a year ago, was aiming to win the race in his last attempt.

Lombardo was content to sit in the pack with Shamus Malia (Scarborough), Xander Keiter (South Portland), Yayha Nure (Deering), Connor Coffin (Scarborough) & Masho Gebremikael (Deering) before making the decisive move with a half mile to go.

"On the drive over to the race this morning, I saw where the half mile to go mark was and figured I would push from there." Lombardo said of his finishing strategy.

The strategy worked out as the senior earned the win by eight seconds over Malia of Scarborough. 

The Deering Rams were the top team once the top four were scored, the Rams placed 4th, 6th, 8th & 9th to knock off Scarborough (2nd,5th,10th,19th)

On the girls side Scarborough junior Bethany Sholl took the win in her first time running in the race. Sholl the defending Class A 3200M outdoors looked strong as she stopped the clock at 13:10 to win the race by 16 seconds.

"I came to the race last year to watch my brother run, so this year decided I wanted too." Sholl said of her decision to run the race.

Her time placed her 23rd overall when combining the boys and the girls together.

The Gorham duo of Iris Kitchen & Kate Tugman ran to second & third place finished respectively.

The Bonny Eagle girls took the team title led by Kayla Raymond's 4th place finish, Ami Beaumier finished 5th, with Christine Toy was 6th while Abby Nelson in 14th rounded out the scoring for the Scots.

Bonny Eagle took the girls' team title.

Deering won the boys race with four runners in the top ten.
